Westminster Cracker Company has been baking in Vermont since 1828. We're a small, established food manufacturer in Rutland, and we're adding a Maintenance Technician to the team that keeps our ovens, mixers, sheeting lines, and packaging equipment running.
You'll be part of a five-person maintenance crew reporting to the Maintenance Supervisor. Depending on your experience, you'll come in at Level I or Level II. Level I performs preventive maintenance and routine repairs while building qualification across the plant. Level II works independently, is the technician on duty for the shift, and decides whether equipment gets repaired, run around, or escalated.
What you'll do:
- Perform scheduled preventive maintenance — inspection, lubrication, adjustment, belt and bearing replacement — and record it in the maintenance system
- Diagnose and repair mechanical, pneumatic, hydraulic, and basic electrical failures on production and packaging equipment
- Respond to production calls and communicate the expected time to restore to the Production Supervisor
- Apply lockout/tagout on every job and follow the food safety requirements that come with a food plant: food-grade lubricants, tool and parts control, post-repair cleanup
- Keep the shop, tools, and critical spares in order
- At Level II, train newer technicians and participate in the on-call rotation
What we're looking for:
Must-haves
- High school diploma or equivalent, plus technical training in industrial maintenance, mechanical, or electrical systems, or at least one year of industrial maintenance experience
- Ability to use hand and power tools safely and read procedures, checklists, and equipment drawings
- Willingness to stop work and speak up when something isn't safe
- Availability to work the assigned shift, including overtime and weekends when production requires
For Level II
- 3+ years of industrial maintenance experience
- Ability to troubleshoot to the failed component and repair without direction, including motor, sensor, and drive replacement
- Comfortable being the only technician in the building on second or third shift
Nice-to-haves
- Food manufacturing or other GMP environment experience
- Experience with ovens, sheeting or lamination lines, or pneumatic conveying
- Welding and fabrication skills
The environment:
Production, packaging, and utility areas plus the maintenance shop. Expect moving machinery, oven heat, noise, flour dust, and the PPE that goes with it. You'll be on your feet, on ladders and platforms, and lifting up to 50 lbs. Second- and third-shift technicians are often the only maintenance employee on site.
What we offer:
- $22.00 - $31.00 per hour, plus $1.00 (2nd shift) or $1.50 (3rd shift) differential
- Health, dental, and vision insurance
- 401(k) with 50% company match on up to 6%, plus a 3% safe harbor contribution regardless of what you put in
- Paid time off and paid holidays
- A defined path from Level I to Level II, with a Level III track for controls and PLC work
