PURPOSE OF ROLE: The Chief Financial Officer is responsible for overall management of the organization’s accounting and finance activities including reporting, budgets, investments, cash management, audits, and asset management as well as procurement and some aspects of facilities. Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, the CFO is expected to work collaboratively with all members of the executive team to ensure the safe, efficient and sustainable operations of the organization.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Covenant House Georgia reserves the
right to unilaterally modify, remove, or add to any of the following:
• Working collaboratively with all members of the leadership team and key stakeholders both in and
outside of the organization, execute the annual strategic planning/budget process.
• Provide direction, oversight and management of policies, procedures and protocols to properly execute
activities and requirements related to assigned areas of responsibility.
• Make recommendations for appropriate organization structure and design for efficient and effective
operations and oversee the operational management accordingly.
• Interface with the Board of Directors through various committees and task forces.
• Allocate necessary resources to execute their aspects of plan and meet his/her program’s
objectives.
• In collaboration with CEO and executive leaders, develop and manage the annual operating and capital
budgets.
• Oversee and/or initiate budget amendments as necessary.
• Serve as key stakeholder for the budgetary process, assist executive team colleagues in
preparation of budget and make recommendations for improving when appropriate.
• Upholds Covenant House Georgia standards of conduct, policies and procedures at all times.
• Manage requisition and approval of all expenses within his/her areas of responsibility.
• Represent the organization in the community and nationwide in accord with the highest standards of integrity.
o Proper staffing and regulation of staff schedules and overtime.
o Work in collaboration with the grant writing team to submit funding proposals.
o Work with the executive leadership team and program department heads in
preparation of an annual budget for the areas of responsibility, to provide input
regarding expenditures, and to maintain the appropriate systems for proper
accounting of funds.
o Responsible for meeting program compliance and funding goals and requirements.
o Provide assistance with special events including assisting program staff and youth
involvement.
• Be available for other duties as assigned or requested by the CEO and/or any committee to which the CEO has delegated authority.
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:
Leadership/Supervisory Duties
• Participate in the development of organizational direction, plans and programs as a
strategic partner with the CEO and both executive and senior leadership teams, with a
special emphasis on programmatic and operational oversight and growth.
• Assist with budget planning, development, implementation and maintenance of respective
budgets.
• Establish credibility with management and employees throughout the organization
becoming an effective proponent and problem solver.
• Administer and manage policies, standards, practices, and security measures for all
organizational functions to assure effective and consistent programmatic success and
controlled growth.
• Provide leadership in development of inter-team communication and cohesiveness,
sustaining culture and supporting staff during organizational growth.
• Responsible for direct supervision of Program Directors and all other assigned staff.
• Provide at least bi-weekly supervision of direct reports (and other staff where appropriate)
to assist with the professional development of staff.
• Coordinate the implementation of program and staffing strategies, interventions and
activities as needed.
• Participate in the evaluation of staff members and provide direction for growth and
development.
• Establish and maintain effective, professional working relationships with youth, coworkers, supervisors, representatives of other organizations, community partners, interns,
stakeholders, etc.
Financial Oversight
• Oversee and ensure the prudent fiscal management of the organization to enable a positive and
strong financial position.
• Ensure CHA’s compliance with generally accepted accounting principles.
• Evaluate and monitor compliance with internal control procedures and best practices.
• Direct and oversee all aspects of the financial audit and ensure a timely completion of the annual
independent financial audits.
• Direct and oversee all aspects of preparation of IRS Form 990 and ensure its timely submission.
• Develop, evaluate, monitor and communicate long and short-term financial objectives
and metrics ensuring consistency and alignment with overall strategic goals and
objectives.
• Analyze financial information and trends to make recommendations to CEO on findings
and recommend corrective measures as necessary.
• Produce monthly financial statements along with analyses showing results in comparison
to budget, historical performance and identifying trends.
• Manage the Organization’s cash balance for payment of payroll, accounts payable,
investment opportunities or required borrowing.
• Oversee preparation of financial and regulatory reports, and provide interpretation therein
when required by law, regulations or as requested.
Grant Funding and Reporting
• Assist with preparation of budget for grants and ensure protocols are in place for
adequate reporting. This would include the collection and management of data necessary
for grant reporting.
• Review all grants and applicable regulations to ensure organization compliance.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
• Bachelor’s degree in business administration, with emphasis in accounting and/or finance. A CPA
designation is preferred. Prior experience as a manager of financial or budgetary activities or
operations may be substituted for the post-secondary education on a year for year basis.
• Seven years of experience in accounting and financial management with increasing responsibilities for
multi-faceted direction and planning. Non-profit accounting experience is preferred.
• Minimum of five years supervisory and leadership experience required with demonstrated
competency in financial oversight.

o Excellent use of relevant technology including Microsoft Office, Excel.
o Knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and their
application not-for-profit industry
o Knowledge of Sarbanes-Oxley Act and internal controls principles.
o Knowledge of structuring and directing budget preparation process in order to
produce a budget report which is intuitive for its users, yet it meets specific financial
objectives of an organization.
o Proficiency in performing and reviewing reconciliations of various general ledger
accounts, including but not limited to cash, prepaid expenses, accounts receivable,
investments, construction work in process, fixed assets, accounts payable, payroll,
accrued liabilities, unearned revenue, long-term debt, equity accounts, various
revenue accounts including State of Georgia and Federal grants as well as donations,
and expense accounts.
WORK ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
• Ability to work a flexible schedule as required including non-traditional hours, weekends,
and holidays.
• Ability to work standing, walking, and/or sitting a minimum of eight hours per day/shift.
• Ability to drive agency or personal vehicles to transport items and/or persons.
• Valid Georgia Driver’s License with acceptable driving record.
• Ability to travel as needed for training or to fulfill job requirements.
• Light lifting.
• Performs all duties as assigned.
• Annual tuberculin test is required.
