We are looking for a Director of Platform Engineering who is production-focused and hands-on, adept at managing teams and engaging in cross-functional projects. The perfect candidate will provide strong, collaborative technical leadership, driving service improvement, overseeing projects from inception to launch, ensuring operational stability, and championing testing and deployment best practices. Outstanding communication skills and the ability to collaborate with a remote team of engineers, organization leadership, and program staff are also essential. Reports directly to Brewster Kahle, founder of the Internet Archive. Salary dependent on experience.

Responsibilities & Duties:

  • Lead, guide, and nurture the engineering teams at Archive.org, overseeing the development, upkeep, and assistance of Archive.org services, encompassing both public-facing applications and internal systems.

  • Identify, strategize, and oversee enhancements in the organization's operational server infrastructure.

  • Facilitate effective collaboration among the various technical teams within the organization.

  • Establish best-practice protocols and procedures in software development across the organization, promoting overall service reliability and scalability.

  • Manage, recruit, schedule, and if necessary, release engineering personnel to fulfill application feature and service goals.

Qualifications & Skills:

  • Proven track record as a manager and mentor leading engineering teams.

  • Extensive experience operating within highly available, high-volume 24x7 production environments and overseeing large-scale server cluster infrastructure.

  • Proficient in documenting, communicating, and disseminating crucial knowledge to both engineering and product teams.

  • Enthusiastic about automation, testing, leveraging data for decision-making, and generating informative reports.

  • Experienced with software application development environments (e.g. for Python and PHP); databases; load balancers and server scaling; monitoring, alerting, and telemetry; and networking.

  • Familiar with Linux system administration and best-practice software development practices.

  • Experienced in deploying and managing search services.

  • Knowledgeable about best practices related to technical security.

  • Outstanding communication and group decision-making skills.

  • Well-versed in open-source methodologies with a keen interest in staying abreast of industry trends.

  • Holds a degree in Computer Science or possesses equivalent practical experience.
