Internet Archive is seeking a Program Manager, Special Collections for its Archiving & Data Services team. Internet Archive also provides mission-aligned services to thousands of organizations, working collaboratively to advance the goal of “Universal Access to All Knowledge.” 


We are seeking a Program Manager, Special Collections to help grow and expand our work with professional and non-institutional groups to build collaborative, comprehensive, and unique digital collections that are freely accessible to all users. This high-profile role will work with internal teams across Internet Archive and with external communities to ensure the archiving of at-risk resources including physical collections to be digitized as well as preservation of born-digital and web-published materials. The role will also lead efforts to build specialized, customized digital library discovery and access portals for these collections as well as building partnerships and collaborations to ensure these collections are integrated in other discovery and educational services. Preliminary duties will focus on building the Special Collections program and creating the first showcase collections and portal, specifically a funded initiative to create a digital library documenting the history of amateur radio and networked digital communications. The role will work closely with community, engineering, product, operations, and development teams and conduct significant outreach and coordination with external partners and stakeholders. Other responsibilities include project management, grant management, communications, and working with department staff on strategic planning, partnership and business development, and supporting the continuous growth and improvement of our services. Reporting to the department director, the Program Manager, Special Collections will be part of the Community Programs team and may directly manage staff.


Key Responsibilities:


  • Lead the Special Collections initiative working with non-institutional groups and communities to build curated, topical digital library and archive collections including collaborating with internal teams and external communities on the digitization of physical material and selection and acquisition of born-digital and web archives.

  • Serve as project manager for building digital library platforms that showcase these special collections, including building and launching the first iteration of these special collections, the Digital Library of Amateur Radio & Communications.

  • Work with external stakeholders to build library and archival collections including personal digital archives and special web archives, ensuring our digital archiving efforts leverage our portfolio of products supporting preservation, research, and open access.

  • Be the primary point of contact for those donating or identifying materials (physical or digital), including overseeing appraisal, metadata, quality assurance, and ingest of archival materials into our various repositories as well as providing technical support to both content donors and library users.

  • Act as product owner for the design, improvement, and maintenance of discovery and access portals for Special Collections, including working with engineering teams on web development, UX testing, and product and platform releases.

  • Work with the Director and a diverse and distributed team of other managers and staff supporting and building digital library products, including directly contributing to design, testing, releases, operations, and community management.

  • Conduct outreach, communications, other efforts to publicize our digital library services and projects and represent Internet Archive at professional events and meetings.

  • Potentially directly manage program staff and work with peer managers on initiatives.


Qualification and Skills:


  • At least 3-5 years of demonstrated program management experience working directly on digital library programs or similar technology services for open access to information in an educational or social good context.

  • Experience in creating roadmaps, project timelines, and ensuring the accomplishment of both internally and externally mandated deliverables.

  • Experience with open-source technology project management and knowledge of digital libraries/archives or open access services, concepts, and practices is preferred.

  • Proven experience working with and potentially managing remote-first teams, including working directly with engineering and program staff at all levels of seniority.

  • Demonstrated ability to succeed in a deadline-driven environment while successfully juggling many projects simultaneously.

  • Experience with grants, both grant writing and awarded grant management, is preferred.

  • Must be a creative, entrepreneurial, self-starter able to work in a dynamic, production-oriented environment that includes a globally-distributed remote team.

  • Candidates must have strong written and oral communication skills, comfort with presenting, and experience working directly with user communities and stakeholders.

  • The role requires some travel within the United States and Canada.

  • Flexibility, self-reliance, a sense of humor, and being energized by ambiguity, possibilities, and problem-solving are valuable qualities.


Job Details:


This is a remote-first position working in a distributed team. Candidates will need to have some time overlap with primarily North America (and largely Pacific Time) based colleagues. Compensation and title will be commensurate with experience and the role is open to candidates of varying seniority with a general, but negotiable, salary range of $65,000 to $85,000.
