The Internet Archive is seeking a Legal Intern to gain hands-on experience working alongside the Legal & Policy team on issues related to the Internet Archive’s ambitious mission to provide universal access to all knowledge.
About the Internet Archive: a non-profit library, headquartered in San Francisco, with an ambitious mission: to provide universal access to all knowledge -- the books, web pages, audio, television and software of our shared human culture. Our engineers, archivists, librarians, and team members have built one of the top 300 websites in the world, https://archive.org/. The Internet Archive digitizes thousands of books a day and collects a hundred million web pages a week. In its 25 years, it has built one of the largest digital libraries in the world by working with hundreds of national and international libraries, archives, museums, universities, and non-profits.
Internship details
You will participate in all aspects of the in-house legal & policy team, including litigation, policy, intermediary liability, privacy, and compliance. Your workload will vary and may include: legal research, regulatory and policy analysis, various writings for different audiences, and in-house counseling. During the summer you will be full time. During the semester we require at least 20 hours per week. Internships are unpaid but a small stipend may be arranged depending on circumstances.
Who should apply: Currently enrolled law school students or recent graduates with an interest in copyright law, library law, content moderation, intermediary liability, open source, open culture, the internet and the people who use it.
Timing: Applications will be evaluated as they are received. You are encouraged to apply early, as we will be accepting on a rolling basis. All candidates local and remote are encouraged to apply. Local candidates may be able to come into the office for part of the week, subject to health guidance.
Summer (typically for an internship May-August)
