Texas Freedom Network  (a 501c4 non-profit) along with our affiliated partner Texas Freedom Network Education Fund (a 501c3 non-profit) is a grassroots organization of community leaders and young Texans building an informed and effective movement for equality and social justice (tfn.org). TFN was established in 1995 and has grown to a 35+ full-time team along with dozens of part-time staff across the state. TFN & TFN Education Fund represent a combined $6 - $8  million annual budget. We also have a smaller associated state PAC.

The new VP of Finance & Operations is critical to the success of the organizations. A successful candidate has a demonstrated ability to oversee financial operations for a multi-department nonprofit (501c3/c4) organization - with experience in the progressive social-justice sector preferred. They are a strategic, big-picture thinker and strong communicator.

As a member of the leadership team, the VP of Finance & Operations participates in strategic planning, evaluation, and fiscal oversight of all organizational budgets and programs to ensure the financial health of Texas Freedom Network/TFN Education Fund.

Reports to: President

Salary: TFN/TFNEF  uses standardized salary bands to ensure pay equity. At the VP level, the salary is $105,000 to $125,000 depending on experience. We are open to considering exceptional candidates at the Sr. Vice President level and salary. We also offer considerable benefits summarized at the end of the job description.

Areas of Responsibility

Own fiscal management for TFN/TFNEF/TFN PAC (~60%): 

  • Oversee all accounts, ledgers, financial software, and reporting systems

  • Supervise and oversee execution of key ongoing fiscal processes, including payroll, payables, account reconciliations, cash-flow projections

  • Ensure financial policies and procedures are in compliance with appropriate GAAP standards and regulatory requirements

  • Ensure timely and accurate completion of (a) annual audit, (b) tax filings, and (c) insurance coverage for all three organizations

  • Manage the creation and monitoring of annual organizational and project/departmental  budgets

  • Oversee ongoing fiscal relationship and compliance between 501c3 (TFNEF) and 501c4 (TFN) organizations, including implementing monthly reimbursement of shared staff and overhead costs between the two organizations

  • Work with Development Director to ensure accurate bookkeeping and compliance for grants and other restricted gifts

Manage administrative staff and department (10%)

  • Supervise Office Manager, Administrative & Operations Coordinator, as well as other support staff as needed

  • Oversee contractors and vendors, including professional employer organization (PEO), accountant/auditors, bookkeeper, legal representation

Oversee operating functions (10%)

  • Review and approve key vendor contracts and agreements (MOUs, sub-grants, partner agreements)

  • Provide guidance and oversight for all programs and staff, ensuring compliance with IRS and state election laws

  • Assist with timely and accurate filing of all campaign finance reports (state and local)

  • Work with the VP of People and Culture to oversee compensation, benefits, and other HR policies with a financial component

Support leadership in implementing organizational governance (20%)

  • Prepare monthly financial reports for leadership and quarterly reports for boards of directors

  • Develop and monitor projections for individual project budgets, personnel budgets, grant budgets, and other organizational expenditures to assist President and leadership team in steering the organizations


Key Requirements

  • Demonstrated knowledge of financial and operational needs of 501c3 and/or 501c4 organization is required. Experience in the social justice sector is preferred.


Other role details

  • Location: Austin, TX

TFN & TFN Education fund staff are distributed across the state, but the executive leadership team must be located in the Austin area. We are able to be flexible with relocation timelines.

  • Ideal start: April - May 2023 

This will allow for a transition period with the current COO

  • Office type: Hybrid

TFN allows for a great deal of flexibility in working hours. Staff may attend events or team meetings either at the TFN office, community events, etc. Some travel in the state and across the country may be needed - less than 10% time
