JOB DESCRIPTION:
Pinao is seeking a Mid-Level Epidemiologist to support the Vision Center of Excellence (VCE). The VCE develops and implements research and programmatic efforts to optimize diagnosis, prevention, mitigation, rehabilitation, and treatment of injuries and disorders affecting the visual system of Service Members and Veterans. This process involves identification and application of evidence-based best practices, collaboration among various stakeholders, and use of information management systems to improve vision outcomes for all Service Members and Veterans treated by the DoD and VA. The VCE integrates clinical care practice with education and training of residents and research and surveillance efforts to serve as a primary resource for vision health at national and regional levels. This position serves as a member of the Epidemiology Team at the VCE and provides epidemiologic and analytic support to VCE operations.
DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provide subject matter expertise in epidemiology and research methods to support projects and related program needs.
- Provide analytic support by performing statistical analysis using R, Python, or other designated statistical analysis software.
- Perform descriptive and inferential analyses and use data visualization to present findings at meetings and/or in reports or manuscripts.
- Conduct data cleaning and data wrangling of data pulled from select DHA information systems such as the MHS Mart (M2) and the Defense and Veterans Eye Injury and Vision Registry (DVEIVR).
- Assist with review of internal and external data requests that require epidemiologic analysis.
- Collaborate with VCE clinicians and other stakeholders to determine study objectives, hypotheses, and methods for their proposed research, which may involve such analyses as disease incidence/prevalence, medical care service utilization, and time-lag analysis.
- Work with the Data Science Team and other VCE teams as needed to facilitate data collection, identify key variables, and strategize techniques to respond to data requests.
- Attend meetings with clinicians and other team members as needed for consultation.
- Work with team members to troubleshoot programming issues.
- Ensure data integrity and data security in handling and management of data.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
To be considered for this position, you must minimally meet the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed below.
Skills / Qualifications:
- Proven record of Epidemiologic investigations with specific experience in ocular trauma and vision-threatening conditions.
- Experience in working with clinical related data and conducting epidemiologic and bio-statistical analysis.
- Experience in applied epidemiology and statistics including generalized linear model, causal inference and data visualization.
- Extensive experience in data analysis and research methods.
- Skills in analyzing complex data from multiple sources and data wrangling using one of the programming languages R and/or Python.
- Preparing clear and concise reports, manuscripts, and other written materials.
- Intermediate or advanced analytical capabilities.
Education:
- Master’s or Doctoral degree in Epidemiology, Statistics, Public Health, or related field OR an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
Security Clearance:
- DoD Secret Security Clearance is required.
