THE OPPORTUNITY 

Hot Bread Kitchen’s rapid growth plan through 2024 includes the expansion of our services to support the recently arrived migrant population in New York City.  Hot Bread Kitchen seeks a part-time, temporary Language Lab Assistant to support language learning activities for our 6-week Culinary Career Pathways for New New Yorkers program. Our ESOL (English Speakers of Other Languages) class focuses on developing English language skills for the culinary workforce that promotes culturally and socially responsive ecosystems of support. This role will assist students and support the ESOL instructor in utilizing language learning resources, technology, and materials to enhance language acquisition and proficiency. 

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide classroom support to the ESOL instructor in carrying out daily lesson plans to a class of 20-25 students.

  • Ensure that the classroom is organized.

  • Maintain a supportive and respectful learning environment conducive to language practice and skill development.

  • Monitor and facilitate interactive language activities and conversational workshops.

  • Assist students in navigating language learning materials and resources. Offer guidance on effective language learning strategies and techniques.

  • Review and grade class assignments.

  • Work with the ESOL instructor and other program staff in assessing student progress.

  • Attend regular staff meetings to report on student issues and progress.

  • Use allotted administrative hours to prepare for classes.

 

Desired Skills & Experience:

  • Passion for Hot Bread Kitchen’s mission.

  • Minimum 1 year teaching or teaching assistant experience in ESOL setting.

  • Spanish-speaking proficiency required and fluency preferred.

  • Proactive, resourceful and results-oriented.

  • Excellent organization skills.

  • Strong communicator with ability to work with a diverse group of bi/multilingual adult learners.

Estimated Total Project Time and Schedule:

 

  1. Culinary ESOL for New New Yorkers

  • Approximately 79  hrs/cohort including:

    • Assisting the ESOL Instructor with approximately 75 hours of contextualized ESOL instruction, with up to 25 members enrolled in the Culinary Training Program (approximately 15 hrs per week).

    • Classes are held in-person at the Manny Cantor Center in lower Manhattan.

  • Monday through Friday 1:45 pm - 4:45 pm

  • Program calendar*:

    • 10/7 - 10/9; 10/11 (4:00 pm-9:00 pm, as needed)

    • 10/15 - 11/4

    • 11/6

    • 11/8

    • 11/12 - 11/14

    • 11/18 - 11/22

*Additional days may be requested

 

Position Start date: October 15, 2024

Location and hours 

This position requires regular in-person attendance at Manny Cantor Center (197 E Broadway, New York, NY 10002) . The class hours are 1:15-4:45pm, five days per week for a six-week period, with the need for some flexibility in work hours.

 

Compensation 

This is a 6-week position (approximately 15 hours per week) . The compensation will be $20 an hour. This is a temporary position and is not eligible for health benefits or holiday pay.
