OPPORTUNITY

The Lead Culinary Instructor provides programmatic and administrative support to ensure the growth and success of Hot Bread Kitchen’s Culinary Fundamentals Program. This position serves as the primary instructor during culinary training, and is responsible for executing the training according to the HBK curriculum and standards. As part of this work, the Lead Culinary Instructor will assess members' performance who are participating in Hot Bread Kitchen’s Culinary Fundamentals Program and meet with members to deliver constructive feedback. The Lead Culinary Instructor is also part of a team responsible for managing the kitchen at Chelsea Market and the Culinary Fundamentals culinary staff during training.  This critical role requires the coordination of  various workforce activities, which range from interviewing and assessing potential program participants to training and  job placement support. This involves conducting one-on-one consultations with members, assisting with outreach, sourcing and developing programmatic materials, and preparing members for careers in their respective industries. This role reports to the Culinary Fundamentals Program Manager and manages the Assistant Culinary Instructor.

The pace of this multifaceted role is fast-moving and requires the ability to effectively engage with diverse groups of program stakeholders. T​he ideal candidate for this role is someone who is proactive, efficient, ​and thorough.

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Program Instruction:

  • Develop mastery of Hot Bread Kitchen Culinary Fundamentals 5 -week curriculum in order to lead the culinary workforce program instruction.

  • Lead or co-lead one-hour professional readiness lessons during culinary cohorts.

  • Provide hands-on, in-person kitchen support during the Culinary Fundamentals Program, including in-class instruction, inventory and ordering of supplies, and daily assessment of trainees.

  • Work 1:1 with members to provide educational and technical support with program content.

  • Provide educational and administrative support during in-person classes.

  • Assess performance through observation and interaction; provide regular feedback and guidance to program members.

  • Collaborate with HBK staff members to assist in the employer matching process.

  • Communicate with Hot Bread Kitchen Program staff about member issues/concerns as well as member successes.

 

Program Management and Administration:

  • Assist in leading the interview and assessment process for the Culinary Fundamentals Program.

  • Manage and support the Assistant Culinary Instructor.

  • Meet regularly with Member Engagement and Job Placement teams to ensure member success.

  • Engage with donors, partners, and other visitors during training.

  • Engage with contracted instructors of ESOL programs to monitor member performance.

  • Create and administer surveys/assessment tools, collect and analyze responses.

  • Track member attendance, performance, and other relevant metrics; maintain accurate records in Google Workspace.

  • Plan and coordinate family meals for program participants as needed.

  • Support culinary program needs, including efforts related to potential program expansion.

  • Edit and update the curriculum, as needed.

 

Special Events:

  • Serve as culinary representative at Brand and Community Engagement events, as requested and per availability.

  • Develop and execute recipes for events and tastings, as requested and per availability.

  • Host cooking classes for partners on an as-requested basis and with regards to availability.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • A minimum of 3-5 years experience in a professional restaurant environment at a managerial level.

  • Previous teaching/training experience preferred.

  • Ability to demonstrate and execute culinary techniques and food preparation methods  as required by the program curriculum.

  • Demonstrated ability to lead, motivate and counsel people.

  • Experience with a variety of pedagogical approaches that will help to inform and strengthen delivery of the Culinary Fundamentals curriculum.

  • Extremely organized and attentive to detail.

  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal and interpersonal skills.

  • General computer proficiency in Google platforms, and productivity software.

 

LOCATION AND HOURS
This position requires regular in-person attendance at our facility in Chelsea Market during training cohorts. Work hours will be approximately 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. 

 

COMPENSATION

This is a full-time position. The salary range is $72,000 to $75,000 and is commensurate with experience. Hot Bread Kitchen's comprehensive benefits package includes health/vision/dental insurance (available from day one), 401K contributions, flexible vacation time, paid parental leave, and a sabbatical program.
