ABOUT HOT BREAD KITCHEN
Hot Bread Kitchen’s mission is to create economic opportunity for women and gender-expansive people, immigrants, and people of color through culinary skills training, high-quality job placement, food entrepreneurship programs, and an ecosystem of support, utilizing New York City’s vibrant food industry as a catalyst for change. Since our founding, we have served 1,800+ members, placed 650+ members in high-quality jobs, and supported 550+ entrepreneurs to launch small food businesses.
Hot Bread Kitchen offers small business development programs, culinary skills training, and job placement, bolstered by individualized wraparound supportive services. Our small business program, HBK Incubates, supports women entrepreneurs of color as they transform their food businesses into sustainable income sources. Culinary fundamentals, our entry-level culinary training provides access to high-quality jobs for those starting their careers in the food industry, while our upskilling offerings enable incumbent workers to gain further skills leading to higher wages and career advancement. We use an ecosystem approach to support our members by working alongside our network of 200+ food employer partners for job placement, and 250+ nonprofit and government partners for member referrals and community engagement.
THE OPPORTUNITY
The Volunteer Manager, a new role within the organization, will be a self-directed, solutions-oriented team player with a hospitality mindset. The Manager will recruit and engage incoming volunteers, steward volunteer programs, manage small-scale events such as mock interviews, volunteer orientations, and member dinners, and secure critical in-kind donations to support the events and programs. The ideal candidate will be deeply collaborative and able to switch between strategic thinking and project management.
This role will be part of a high-performing Development Team responsible for Hot Bread Kitchen’s $9+ million philanthropic revenue. Reporting to the Director of Institutional Giving and Development Strategy, the ideal candidate will collaborate with other team members (Brand, Strategy, Programs, and Operations) to ensure that we successfully recruit and steward relationships with our volunteers.
The Manager will oversee direct volunteer opportunities with Hot Bread Kitchen members, such as mock interviews, small business mentorship, ESOL support, and impact consulting work to advance the impact of our economic mobility programs. In collaboration with Program Managers on the Workforce and Small Business Teams, the Volunteer Manager will ensure the successful execution of these initiatives.
Volunteer Program Management (50%)

Schedule new and continuing volunteer activities, including volunteer orientations, onboarding, and events.

Collaborate across the organization to assess gaps and design volunteer programs that address those gaps.

Design and create volunteer intake and onboarding process.

Prospect and recruit new volunteers and corporate partners.

Steward a portfolio of volunteers and corporate engagement leaders through regular touchpoints and newsletters, event invitations, and other relationship-building connections.

Collect, track, and analyze volunteer data, such as intake information, participation records, and survey responses, and collaborate with the team to design impact measures for the volunteer program.

Regularly collect internal and external feedback on the volunteer program, and make improvements to address any challenges.
Event logistics (50%)

Serve as a primary contact and event coordinator for volunteer groups and individual volunteers before, during, and after events.

Manage planning and day-of logistics for volunteer events and lead events.

Write event outlines, run of shows, schedules, and scripts, and event stewardship plans.

Manage promotion of public events with the Brand team, including invitations, ticketing, and social media.

Create and maintain a comprehensive annual volunteer events calendar for the organization, with associated production schedules.
Qualifications:

2 years of project management experience: first-hand involvement in initiating, planning, executing, and monitoring projects and events.

Demonstrable interest in donor, alumni, volunteer, and community engagement.

Ability to listen, take direction, and work collaboratively in a team environment.

Experience in public speaking and facilitating group projects safely and productively.

Ability to respond quickly in a fast-paced, evolving environment.

Proficiency in Google Workspace Suite, and ideally Salesforce. We also use Asana and Slack for our day-to-day work.

Excellent organizational skills with diligent follow-through.

Location
This is a hybrid position, with flexibility to work remotely. Regular in-person attendance is required each week for departmental needs and events. Our facility is located in Chelsea Market, 75 Ninth Avenue, in Manhattan.
Compensation
This is a full-time position with a salary range between $70,000 - $75,000. Hot Bread Kitchen's comprehensive benefits package includes health/vision/dental insurance (eligible from day one), 401K contributions, paid office closure days (including holidays, and staff appreciation days, and a one week holiday break at the end of the year), flexible and generous vacation and sick time, paid parental leave, and a sabbatical program (after 5 years of service).
