Camelot Energy Group (Camelot) is seeking a senior leader to build, grow, and manage our Owner’s Engineering (OE) team that is helping clients develop and build solar, energy storage, and other clean energy assets. If you have experience building utility-scale (10MW+) projects of this type and are intrigued by a chance to “get in at the ground floor” and help build up a new line of business in a small company setting that focuses on people first, then this may be the role for you.

About Us

Camelot, founded at the beginning of 2022, is a technical and strategic advisory firm supporting asset owners, investors, public agencies, and other stakeholders in the clean energy space. Our clients build, own, and operate solar and energy storage projects and we help them by providing technical due diligence, owner’s engineering, strategic advisory, and other bespoke services. Our core values of courage, empathy, integrity, and service are at the heart of our business and support our mission of powering a just and sustainable society with clean energy technologies.

Camelot’s founder, Shawn Shaw, is an 20+ year veteran of the solar and energy storage industry, with experience ranging from supporting state incentive programs to supporting some of the largest banks and financiers on their most challenging project finance transactions. Shawn has built, trained, and nurtured consulting teams throughout his career and founded Camelot to be a human-centric consultancy that values trust, flexibility, and mentorship.

The team at Camelot currently consists of a small group dedicated individuals with backgrounds from larger consultancies, EPC contractors, project developers, and testing laboratories. The team works remotely but has grown close through company events, both online and in-person, and a shared commitment to our mission and values. We have team members across the US, from Maine to California, and look forward to adding many more new faces over the coming years.

About the Position

The Director of Owner’s Engineering is a senior-level position that will work closely with the CEO to solidify the current OE department and continue to grow it as a business unit with distinct financial performance and personnel management processes. Initially, the role will be a strong mix of “doing” and “leading”, with a bit of “planning” included to help the CEO grow the OE business. Expected duties include:

  • Near-term line management of 2-3 Project Managers and Engineers currently performing OE work on several portfolios of 20-120MWp solar and energy storage projects
  • Direct work with clients on OE engagements, typically including tasks such as:
    • Negotiation of EPC Agreements
    • Design management and review
    • Energy yield analyses and site optimization
    • Community engagement support
    • Schedule development and monitoring
    • Construction management
    • Site inspections
    • Progress reporting
    • Interacting with financiers and Independent Engineers
    • Overseeing commissioning, testing, and placed in service activities
  • Working closely with CEO to progress department structure and business plans
  • Support CEO on business development activities, such as conferences and marketing efforts
  • Lead development of OE-related proposals and negotiation of associated engagements with clients
  • Continuing ongoing efforts to build relevant tools, processes, training materials, and other resources

You will have wide latitude to build and manage Camelot’s OE Department as part of the broader business and the role will feature a mix of independent leadership and coordination with the CEO to ensure consistency with Camelot’s mission and values. You will also coordinate with senior staff focused on Technical Advisory, Supply Chain Services, and other primary business lines. The role will emphasize growth but only based on a solid foundation of mentorship, process, and wellbeing for you and for the team.

During a typical day, you will likely have client meetings, check-ins with colleagues and direct reports, you may find yourself out in the field overseeing clean energy projects’ progress or conducting reviews of technical documents or deliverables, and (of course) being sure to take some time for rest, exercise, and non-work activities. The work can be fast-paced at times but we proactively manage our clients, project intake, workload, and staff to curate a positive working environment that leads to better results.

Are you excited about this role but concerned that you're not fully qualified? Studies have shown that women are less likely to apply to jobs unless they meet every single requirement, so we encourage you to apply even if you feel you may not meet every one of the requirements listed below. We are glad to consider some minor adjustments for the right candidate.

About You

We are seeking a team member that wishes to step into a leadership and business-building role with a sense of purpose. Specific attributes we are looking for include:

Education: We are seeking a candidate with a 4-year degree from an accredited degree program and a Professional Engineering license. Candidates with advanced degrees or specialized training will receive additional consideration.

Experience: A successful candidate will have 10+ years of experience working in solar and energy storage construction and engineering roles and 3+ years of team leadership experience. We are looking specifically for candidates with utility-scale project experience in the clean energy sector (though are willing to consider applicants with significant DG experience and limited utility-scale experience) and a strong background interfacing with project owners and contractors will be important for this role. The ideal candidate will have a mix of client-facing and field experience that allows them to step into an Owner’s Engineer role and quickly identify real-world risks and get them addressed. We also are looking for experience in managing a team and reasonable familiarity with business management concepts. Folks with backgrounds managing projects at EPC contractors, OE firms, and technical asset management firms will likely have the background desired.

Competencies: Given the varied nature of our projects and clients, we seek a candidate with the following competencies:

  • Experience in design and construction of utility-scale solar and energy storage assets, with good familiarity of all involved disciplines
  • Construction management, including site inspections, schedule monitoring, progress reporting, and similar activities
  • Team building and management
  • Ability to quickly organize and digest information
  • Critical thinking and ability to communicate ideas clearly in written and verbal formats
  • General business and financial literacy (e.g., budgets, contracts, proposals)
  • Strong proficiency in MS Office suite

Inclinations: The role will involve remote work and the majority of the tasks will be completed in an office setting, with some periodic need for fieldwork, travel for meetings, and similar activities. Comfort with working remotely, interacting over video conferencing platforms, and operating independently will be necessary. This role will also require flexibility in switching between tasks and priorities quickly.  We anticipate typical travel for this role to be up to 10%, which may include local and out-of-state travel as needed for site visits, conferences, client meetings, and company events; however, there may be opportunities for additional travel depending on project needs, staff availability, and individual skills/interests.

Location: This position is open to those permanently residing in the U.S. but work location is remote and completely flexible otherwise. We would love to employ new colleagues in other countries but, unfortunately, are not administratively able to offer employment to non-US residents at this time, nor can we act as Visa sponsors.

Particulars

Camelot is not a typical consulting firm. We are looking for great people and we strongly believe that the main job of our leadership team is to bring in great people, support them, and then get obstacles out of their way. We reject the notion that consulting has to mean unending long days, 24/7 responsiveness, or pointless metrics. Our goal is that you enjoy your work and have a chance to make a real impact on solving the world’s energy challenges with a minimum of pointless activity during your typical day.

Salary: The salary range for this position is $170,000-$190,000 per year. Yes, we put that in the job description. We do this because we dislike haggling over salary as much as you do and because we believe in transparency. For the right candidate that is more, or less, experienced than noted above we will consider an adjusted salary that reflects your experience. Annual raises are indexed to publicly available inflation data, as well as individual merit. We also periodically review market conditions to ensure all staff are fairly compensated for their roles and duties.

Annual Incentive: Each of us is vital to the success of the business and the Annual Incentive reflects this by providing an incentive based on company performance against budget. For years in which the company performs to its financial targets, the typical incentive will be 10%, with the understanding that this may be adjusted each year to reflect actual performance (i.e., in a year in which we miss our targets the incentive may be lower and in years that we exceed targets it may be higher). The incentive will be calculated and paid in the 2nd half of December. The amount received is based on your pre-tax wages during the year. For example, if your hire date is June 1st (Day 152) and your gross salary is $100,000 per year, your incentive would be calculated as (152/365)*$100,000*10% = $4,164.38. If your start date occurred before the current year, then there is no pro-rating required.

Performance Bonus: In addition to the Annual Incentive, we may provide a bonus based on company and personal performance. Such bonuses will be offered at the sole discretion of the CEO and may take the form of direct payment and/or profit sharing distributions to relevant retirement accounts.

Health Benefits: We offer a selection of health, dental, and vision plans that you can choose from. We also offer access, and encourage the use of, virtual/online mental healthcare services. Camelot provides each eligible employee with a stipend of up to $1000 per month ($500 per pay period) towards insurance premiums, including health, dental, and vision plans. Employees may apply this stipend towards their selected plans, with this amount selected to generally cover typical premiums for a single person’s health, dental, and vision plans.

Please note that you will be eligible to sign up for insurance upon your start date and Trinet provides a 30-day window in which you can select your chosen coverage. So long as coverage is selected in this 30-day window, your coverage effective date is either:

  1. The first day of your hire month if you start on or before the 15th of the month or
  2. The first day of the following month if your hire date falls after the 15th of the month

Insurance information, such as would normally be found on a physical insurance card, will be available in your Trinet dashboard shortly after enrolling.

Trinet “Enrich” Benefits: Camelot has subscribed to a suite of benefits from Trinet known as “Enrich”. This suite includes Enrich Access, Enrich Adopt, Enrich Disaster Relief, and Enrich Learn. Each benefit is described generally below but please reference the Enrich documents on Trinet for the more formal description and instructions for accessing these benefits.

Support for Reproductive Healthcare (Enrich Access Program): At Camelot, we acknowledge the fundamental right of our team members to make healthcare choices that align with their personal values and medical needs. As some states where our employees reside may elect to restrict or limit access to certain reproductive health options including access to abortions, contraceptives, or related services; Camelot will provide financial support to employees wishing to seek such services in other locations. This support includes time off, as reasonably required to attend relevant treatments, and financial reimbursement up to $1,950 (pre-tax) per calendar year to cover out of pocket costs associated with travel needed to receive treatments. For the avoidance of doubt, it is our firm belief that these services should be available to all who need them, and this policy aims to reduce the burden on those who are forced to seek such treatments outside their state of residence. Furthermore, this benefit extends to employee dependents, spouses, and domestic partners (of any gender).

Adoption Incentive (Enrich Adopt Program):

Employees may receive up to $5,000 per tax year related to one adoption to reimburse eligible expenses such as agency fees, legal fees, or travel expenses.

Disaster Relief (Enrich Disaster Relief Program):

Employees may receive up to $1,000 per year to cover disaster relief related expenses not already covered by relevant insurance. Camelot will provide this benefit to employees in the order applications are received up to a maximum of $5,000 per year company-wide limit.

Tuition Reimbursement (Enrich Learn Program):

Employees may receive reimbursement for qualifying educational expenses related to attending courses. While this may mean pursuing an advanced degree, employees may receive reimbursement for courses taken outside a formal degree program. Moreover, this benefit also covers materials and fees associated with such courses, as well as the tuition itself. Please refer to the documents on Trinet for a full summary of eligible expenses.

Note also, that some loan payments may be eligible for this benefit. In this way, employees may receive this benefit over several years to more fully cover a higher cost educational program.

The maximum benefit for this program is set at the IRS limit of $5,250 per year.

Life and Accidental Death and Dismemberment Insurance: Though we hope to never need it, we provide each employee with a small life/AD&D insurance policy at no cost. This policy has a value of $50,000. Employees may purchase additional coverage, if desired.

Retirement Benefits: We offer a competitive 401(k) program via Empower, which is integrated with our Trinet platform. Empower offers a range of investment options and Camelot provides 100% matching contributions up to 4% of employee salary. There is a small annual service fee of $63 that each employee will have deducted from their paychecks for Empower. (Please note that if the maximum allowable yearly contribution is selected, Empower automatically assumes you mean 100% of your paycheck and will contribute that amount until the maximum is reached.)

PTO: We believe that overly managed schedules are a painful part of business-and an unnecessary one. We offer our team members unlimited PTO and, in fact, require that all team members take a minimum of two weeks’ PTO per year. Rest and recreation are key to wellbeing and, selfishly, to your job performance. We trust our team members to balance their work priorities with time off and we offer as much flexibility as we can in setting work schedules with everyone. Parental leave is also supported under our unlimited PTO policy and handled on a case-by-case basis. We do ask that employees enjoy this benefit responsibly and work closely with their manager and colleagues to ensure that time taken does not negatively impact the business and our clients.

Holidays: In addition to offering all members of our team unlimited PTO, Camelot closes business on the following U.S. Federal Holidays:

  • New Year’s Day
  • Martin Luther King Jr.’s Birthday
  • Washington’s Birthday
  • Memorial Day
  • Juneteenth
  • Independence Day
  • Labor Day
  • Columbus Day
  • Veteran’s Day
  • Thanksgiving Day

In lieu of including Christmas as a dedicated holiday, Camelot provides each employee with four (4) floating holidays each year to honor religious or secular traditions of their choice throughout the year. Camelot celebrates a wide diversity in religious and spiritual views among members of our team and strives to provide a welcoming environment to people of all faiths, creeds, and backgrounds.

Connectivity Stipend: All full-time personnel will receive a monthly non-taxable stipend of $100 added to their payroll. This is intended to partly offset costs associated with internet connection, cell phone, or similar items. We understand that employees will generally have these services whether they work here or not but we also recognize that there may be added costs associated with using such services for business purposes.

Office Supplies Stipend: As part of onboarding, full-time employees will be equipped with a laptop and the following accessories as required: up to two 27” external monitors, Bluebooth trackpad or mouse, external keyboard, monitor stand, and docking station. Additionally, all full-time personnel are given an allowance of $300 per year, available in the first year of employment, for any other major office supplies. These funds can be used to purchase office decorations, supplies, furniture, or just about anything else reasonably required to make your working space more comfortable.

Travel Services Reimbursement: Travel can be stressful, whether for business or personal reasons. All Camelot team members who wish to obtain TSA PreCheck status will be eligible to have the associated registration fee(s) reimbursed. This includes both the initial fees and any fees associated with renewing this service that are incurred while employed at Camelot, even if you rarely travel on company business. Equivalent services, such as Global Entry, may receive partial reimbursement up to the current cost of TSA PreCheck. We can’t make airports any more pleasant to visit but if we can help our team members spend less time in security lines, we are happy to do so.

Professional Development: We strongly believe in supporting the growth of our people as they build expertise in the clean energy industry. As such, Camelot will provide the following Professional Development benefits:

  • Reimbursement for testing and registration fees for approved and relevant industry certifications, including those offered by the North American Board of Certified Energy Professionals (NABCEP) and state level professional engineering (PE) licensing bodies. Employees who are reimbursed for testing costs but do not receive a passing score may only be reimbursed for an additional test.
  • Reimbursement for renewals of approved certifications
  • Each employee will have an annual budget of up to $500 for role-relevant trainings and, if applicable, Continuing Education Units (CEUs) required to maintain certificates and licenses. This amount resets on January 1 of every year of employment, so employees are encouraged to make full use of this benefit each year.
  • Total employee-guided Professional Development reimbursement will be capped at $1,200 per calendar year, based on any combination of reimbursement for testing, registration, renewals, and continuing education expenses.

In addition, from time to time, Camelot may offer employees additional training opportunities and employees are encouraged to request additional training that they feel is relevant and useful. Such additional education will be at the discretion of the management team and based on relevant business priorities at that time.

Other Elective Benefits

Our access to the Trinet platform offers a range of elective benefits that employees may enroll in, if desired. These include:

  • Supplemental Life Insurance
  • Short/long-term Disability Insurance
  • Flexible Spending Accounts
  • Accidental Death/Dismemberment Insurance
  • Accident/Critical Illness Insurance
  • Discounted Home and Auto Insurance
  • Legal Advisory Services
  • Employee Assistance Program and Health Advocacy Service

Putting Our Money Where Our Mouth Is: We work in the clean energy space and are trying to build a better world. Our benefits should reflect that. We offer each team member:

  • One-time incentive for installing solar PV at your home ($1,000)
  • Annual incentive to perform O&M on a PV system you already own or to purchase energy-saving equipment (up to $300 per year)
  • One-time incentive for purchase of an EV or energy storage system ($1,000)
  • Opportunities to support, on our time, organizations such as Engineers Without Borders in addressing energy and infrastructure equity challenges

Employees may receive “one-time” benefits no more frequently than once every five (5) calendar years of continuous service.
