Location: Oakland & Remote


Reports To: Sr. Technical Instructors


Compensation: $32/HR, 25 hours/week


Starting/End Date: May 28th, 2024 - August 30th, 2024 (14 weeks)


Tentative Schedule: 


Lectures and Learning Labs: Monday and Thursday from 10:00-1:30 PM, PST


Tiger Teams: Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 10:00-12:00 PM, 1:00-3:00 PM, 4:00-6:00 PM, PST


Office Hours and Admin hours: Approximately, six hours


 


Hack the Hood (HtH) launched in 2013 to empower Black, Latinx, Indigenous, and AAPI  communities to shift from technology consumers to technology producers, designers, and creators. About the position


 


As a Technical Instructor, you will work with other Instructors, program and organizational staff to deliver training content in Hack the Hood’s informal education programs. The curriculum focuses on an introduction to coding in python and fundamental data science skills with an emphasis on applications for social justice and tech ethics. 


 


The successful candidate will have practical technology, computer science, and data science skills with an emphasis on how technology can be used for constructive social and racial justice goals. Candidates with experience as a teacher, tutor, or facilitator will stand out. Your practical technical expertise and enthusiasm for teaching, youth skill development and social justice will set your application apart. We are a small organization, so a self-starter who appreciates individual and team accountability is required.  


 


In this role, you will be responsible for teaching either an introduction to coding in python or fundamental data science to learners ages 14-25. Typical programs require approximately 19 hours per week of teaching time. Additional support for office hours and teacher preparation are an expected part of the work schedule. Learners are primarily geographically located in the Bay Area and may be learning in individual, collaborative, virtual environments. 


 


Responsibilities:




  • Be the lead instructors to teach a sociotechnical and software development or data science curriculum to youth ages 14-25




  • Lead and facilitate teaching sessions, community building and related professional skills sessions.   




  • Leverage existing instructor materials and student resources (course outlines, instructional materials, and training aids).




  • Provide small group mentorship opportunities and technical support to students. 




  • Collaborate with instructors and programs team members to identify young people with strong technical and professional development skills for post-program opportunities.




  • Collaborate with the team to ensure all student data is collected and accurate in a timely manner. .




 


We’re excited to connect with candidates who have or are working towards:




  • BS degree in Computer Science, mathematics, or other STEM equivalent (e.g. certification of achievement, advanced status in a tech bootcamp)




  • Working knowledge of python, or java, and data science




  • Experience in teaching, giving technical talks, workshops, or tutorials at conferences, meetups, or schools




  • Experience working with and facilitating learning experiences for Black, Latinx, and Indigenous students 




  • A passion for and knowledge of approaches to racial justice & equity in the technical domain




  • A passion for inclusion in technology
