About the Role:

The Senior Manager, Foundation Relations (Internally: Sr. Program Manager, Institutional Giving) is a front-line fundraiser tasked with growing and deepening CIS’ funder relationships with private foundations. This person will lead strategy and implementation for building our prospect pipeline for private foundations, cultivate relationships with foundations aligned with the work of CIS, and ultimately secure new sources of revenue in support of our organizational mission and strategic plan.

This person is an all-star writer, with fluency in social justice and race equity topics. The successful candidate is confident in developing trusting relationships with foundation program officers, operating as a mission champion for CIS. They are steeped in foundation sector trends and practices, ideally with knowledge of trends among youth and education-focused funders. Communities In Schools seeks an experienced fundraiser with a proven track record of identifying and researching prospective funders, cultivating relationships, and securing foundation grants. The candidate is energized by the challenge of growing our foundation revenue. Raising $5M over the next five years, and demonstrating $1M in new funding in our pipeline by the end of the first year.

Required Skills & Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in related field.

Five to eight years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience required.

Proven track record securing significant foundation grants (preferably national in scope; preferably high figures and above) and managing relationships with private foundations.

Knowledge of private foundation landscape and trends.

Experience building and tracking moves in a prospective funder pipeline.

Fluency in areas of race equity and social justice as it relates to education and youth development.

Comprehension of the private foundation funding process and norms.

Understanding of, or demonstrated ability to quickly learn, trends in the education sector and the Communities In Schools model of integrated student supports.

Able to demonstrate strong writing abilities and proposal development skills.

Ability to support the Growth & Development team in developing materials (proposals/one-pagers/partnership concepts) through a race equity and DEI frame.

Ability to leverage organizational leadership to cultivate relationships with funders and experience with prospect research strategies and tactics.

Proficient in understanding budgets attached to funder proposals and grants.

Ability to work independently and cross-functionally and develop relationships with colleagues across departments.

Microsoft Office Suite.


Preferred knowledge, skills, and abilities:

Prior experience using Salesforce a plus.


Primary Duties & Responsibilities:

40% - Outreach and partnership cultivation, including concept and proposal development.

30% - Develop funder pipeline through research. 

15% - Strategy development aligning the interests of CIS and private foundations.

15% - Stewardship of new foundation partners to renewal.
