Job Description:

The Lead Audio Engineer is responsible for making Exactly Right podcasters and content creators sound their best by managing the in-studio and remote recording process with creativity and sensitivity. In addition to ensuring that the highest quality audio is captured, the Lead Audio Engineer creates and executes industry-leading sound designs, collaborates with hosts and producers on the editing process, and ensures that our listeners always enjoy audio of the highest quality.  They ensure recording logistics run smoothly, coordinating the efforts of the production teams. They are the regular point of contact for many of our hosts and guests. This position reports directly to the Exactly Right Head of Production.

Ongoing and daily duties and responsibilities include:

    • Lead the creative sound design and production process for Exactly Right network, including our most challenging, production-heavy series.
    • Hire, train and manage in-house and freelance engineering staff.
    • Manage studio production equipment, software and facilities for all studio activities including podcast engineering, voice-over and multi-track engineering, studio rental, video productions, and other studio usage as needed.
    • Oversee engineering team training, scheduling, workflow, quality control, delivery, studio usage and network recording guidelines.
    • Provide support and training to the content team in Pro Tools, Omny, proprietary ad delivery websites and recording best practices. Foster deep trust, reliability, and good relationships with hosts, producers and others, often acting as a liaison between creatives and other departments of the company and resolving conflicts.
    • Provide technical guidance for remote recordings, instructing hosts, guests and producers on best practices to get high quality broadcast quality recordings outside of the studio.
    • Lead team efforts to design and improve studio facilities, equipment, production and operational workflow.
    • Manage digital archives and servers to the highest industry standard.
    • Collaborate creatively and closely with high profile performers, artists, producers, and engineers to provide creative and technical consultation, and to help develop new shows, specials and pilots.
    • Exercise creative and professional oversight in directing talent to perform advertisements with wide ranging sponsor expectations.
    • Collaborate with engineers and producers to publish flawless final products.
    • Maintain highly organized, professional-standard archival file systems and data workflows, including system backups.
    • Occasional field recording may be required.
    • Act as concierge to incoming guests and hosts.
    • Work with Managing Producer to book shows in Exactly Right Studio Calendar and communicate recording details to producers and engineering staff.
    • Skillfully and professionally photograph performers and pull video clips from recordings with an eye to creative re-use in social media, web, press and public relations.
    • Work with Exactly Right’s various teams including marketing, advertising operations and partnerships to provide audio expertise when necessary.
    • Other studio and engineering duties as needed.


    Qualifications:

    • 5+ years experience as an audio engineer required and 2-3 years experience working with podcasts or broadcasts preferred.
    • Highly experienced with recording studio equipment including mixers, microphones, signal flow, etc.
    • Experience with creative editorial; making choices in cutting and arranging content to professional standards of comedic and dramatic pacing, narrative continuity and quality.
    • Experience with remote home recording for podcasts or other media preferred.
    • Previous experience with field recording and as a live sound engineer preferred.
    • Very high level of Pro Tools experience required, as well as familiarity with Waves, iZotope and other industry-standard 3rd party plugins.
    • Basic back-end knowledge of Omny, as well as Art19, Libsyn, SoundCloud, and other third party hosting sites.
    • Significant creative experience designing stereo soundscapes, ambiences, vocal and musical effects, and mixing to artistic effect. 
    • Experience with creative editorial; making choices in cutting and arranging content to professional standards of comedic and dramatic pacing, narrative continuity and quality.


    Work Environment:

    • Standard office environment, currently working remotely
    • Often required to work weekend and/or non-standard hours
    • Minimal travel may be required
