Host Organization: The Health Alliance for Violence Intervention

Philadelphia is seeing alarming growth in gun violence, with victims of gun violence increasing significantly over the last year. Hospital-based violence intervention programs can interrupt this trend by addressing the psychological and physical wounds of trauma. Since the Affordable Care Act’s Medicaid expansion, Medicaid has become the largest payer of health care costs for violent injury in the United States. Examining Medicaid data from the delivery of these promising programs can help us better understand and provide care to patients and stop repeat violent reinjury.
The Fellow will work with the Health Alliance for Violence Intervention (HAVI) to conduct a groundbreaking analysis of violently injured patients in Philadelphia. The findings from this retrospective analysis will provide hospitals and policymakers with evidence-based knowledge and incentives to invest in violence prevention efforts. Specifically, the Fellow will:
Analyze Medicaid claims data to better understand:
- The total healthcare utilization costs for violently injured patients, including inpatient/outpatient care, substance use treatment, and mental health services; and
- The impact of hospital-based violence intervention programs on health care and other social service sector utilization.
To support this data analysis, the Fellow will engage state Medicaid agencies to secure patient data for analysis in coordination with Healing Hurt People, one of the HAVI’s hospital-based violence intervention member programs in Philadelphia.
Inform policymakers of the effects of hospital-based violence intervention programs on Pennsylvania’s Medicaid program. This includes direct work with policy partners and through the communication of findings via policy briefs and peer-reviewed publications.
Candidates should have completed a PhD in public health or a related field between 2018 and 2021. Candidates should have a background in health services research, public health, and/or injury prevention. Experience working with Medicaid patients and developing policy briefs is preferred but not required.

One final candidate will be recommended to and interviewed by the Stoneleigh Foundation in January 2021. In March, Stoneleigh staff will present recommended candidates and projects to its Board of Directors.
