Ogawa Plaza, Suite 620; close to BART, the 12th Street/City Center Station and AC Transit Bus lines.  The SoCal office  is located in downtown Los Angeles, is across from Pershing Square at 523 W. Sixth Street, Suite 203; and is close to public rail and bus transportation.

About the Position

The Sr. Manager, Business Development role plays an integral part in communicating Build It Green’s (BIG’s) services and developing new business.  This position is responsible for strategic research, technical writing, budget development and related functions in the preparation of proposals in response to competitive Requests for Proposals, grant solicitations, notices of funding availability, etc. Target audiences will generally be key decision makers from energy utilities; local, state, and federal government agencies; foundations; and private-sector philanthropists. This individual must possess strong knowledge, skills, and abilities in the following areas:

§  Thorough understanding of Build It Green’s strategic priorities and plans for business growth

§  In-depth working knowledge of the utility and public sector, particularly in the areas of energy efficiency, demand response, and other customer-facing programs

§  Working knowledge of BIG’s operational strengths, core competencies, and business processes

§  Understanding of the goals and priorities driving potential funders’ decision making, preferably coupled with a professional acquaintance with key individuals involved

§  Strong writing and communication skills to tell a persuasive and compelling story about BIG’s qualifications to be awarded funding

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES 

  • Key duties and responsibilities of the Sr. Manager, Business Development are to:
  • Contribute thought leadership, strategic thinking, partnership development, and subject matter expertise in the pursuit of competitive funding opportunities worth $10–15 million per year
  • Lead prospecting efforts to research, track, and monitor competitive bidding opportunities that align with Build It Green’s mission, strategic priorities, and core competencies.
  • Maintain and cultivate industry connections that provide insight into emerging opportunities.
  • Lead development of written proposals in response to competitive bidding opportunities from utilities, government agencies, and foundations. Role includes leading the proposal team, assisting in the design of the program, writing new and/or editing existing content, assembly of supporting documentation; overall quality control; and production and submittal of proposals within specified time constraints.
  • Develop proposal budgets and program design in collaboration with the operational teams
  • Maintain quality results by using and developing templates; following proposal-writing standards including readability, consistency, and tone; maintaining proposal support databases.
  • Obtain approvals by reviewing proposal with key providers and project managers.
  • Meet proposal deadlines by establishing priorities and target dates for information gathering, writing, review, and approval; coordinating requirements with contributors; contributing proposal status information to review meetings; transmitting proposals.
  • Improve proposal-writing results by evaluating and re-designing processes and approach.
  • Contribute to ongoing business development including research, innovative program design, client prospecting, environmental scans of potential program opportunities, customer demographic analysis, competitive research, and business trends.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor's degree (B.A. or B.S.) from four-year college or university in a related field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum five (5) years professional experience in the utility or public sector in roles that lead to in-depth working knowledge of regulatory policy, program design, implementation, and/or evaluation, particularly in the areas of energy efficiency, demand response, and other customer-facing programs
  • Demonstrable track record of proposal writing, grant writing, technical writing, research, and business development or fundraising.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills including the ability to listen effectively, to select and use appropriate communication methods, and to present ideas and information effectively; communication skills evident in presentations, written work products, graphic design, layout, and technical documentation
  • Excellent strategic thinking, capable of grasping the connections between big ideas and minor details.
  • Capable of working independently; self-motivated and deadline oriented.  Flexible and able to work in a fast-paced environment as needed and to meet critical timelines.
  • Intermediate proficiency in quantitative analysis, including descriptive statistics.
  • Strong budgetary skill and financial literacy.
  • Intermediate working knowledge of energy efficiency, green building, climate change, or related field.
  • Ability to communicate with diverse audiences.
