About the Position

The Accounting Manager duties are critical to the success of BIG’s diverse client relationships and large contracts with utilities, local governments, and state and federal agencies. This Manager reports to the Senior Director of Finance and Operations and supervises an accounting staff associate.  The Accounting Manager is responsible for performing highly specialized accounting work required to maintain the organization’s general ledger.  The manager will direct and coordinate the daily activities of the accounting department to quickly and accurately record the revenues, expenditures, assets, and liabilities of the Authority. The incumbent should be a highly motivated self-starter with supervisory, review, and proofing experience. The incumbent is also responsible for preparing annual financial statements and providing assistance to the coordinate the annual audit.


Duties & Responsibilities

  • Ensure an accurate and timely monthly, quarterly and year end close.
  • Prepare general ledger entries including accruals
  • Perform account reconciliations
  • Ensure the timely reporting of all monthly financial information.
  • Work with Senior Director and Auditors to prepare audit schedules and manage the audit.
  • Ensure payroll is processed and accurate.
  • Review AP check/wire selections; review wire template setup, positive pay uploads.
  • Post customer payments.
  • Assist with AR collection issues as needed.
  • Upload/download system interfaces into QuickBooks.
  • Manage customer contract billing with project managers.
  • Prepare periodic cash management reports for Senior Director.
  • Company tax or regulatory filings.
  • Assist program managers with monthly budgeting and forecasting, and provide them with timely feedback.
  • Input budget details/input actuals details; compare and analyze, review with Senior Director.
  • Assist in development and implementation of new procedures to enhance workflow and strengthen internal controls.
  • Help to establish and update documented policies, procedures and workflow for assigned areas of responsibility.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to be able to communicate effectively both in writing and verbally with all levels of constituents
  • Review and supervise accounting staff person.

Job Requirements

Leader with 5-7 years of accounting and finance experience, use of accounting/financial systems.  She or he will ideally have experience in a complex nonprofit that has presented multiple programs and the following demonstrated experience and qualifications:

  • Minimum of a B.S. in Accounting/Finance or related degree. Strong knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
  • 5-7 years of overall professional accounting experience; ideally broad financial and operations management experience; including payroll, accounts payables and receivables.
  • Experience of final responsibility for the quality and content of all financial data, reporting and audit coordination
  • Supervisory experience
  • Excellent communications skills and ability to explain and instruct others directly, and in writing.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to maintain detailed records.
  • Ability to develop and establish financial policies and procedures.
  • Ability to work independently, with little supervision.
  • Nonprofit experience a plus
  • Technology savvy with knowledge of accounting and time management software
  • Excellent Excel skills
  • Commitment to meeting deadlines
