Position Description

The Client Services Clinical Counseling Intern provides trauma-informed counseling to adult survivors of human trafficking under licensed supervision, carrying a small caseload and participating in documentation, supervision, training, and team collaboration.

About the Position

The Client Services Clinical Counseling Intern provides trauma-informed clinical counseling services to adult survivors of human trafficking under the supervision of licensed mental health professionals. This internship is designed for advanced graduate-level students pursuing degrees in Social Work, Mental Health Counseling, or Counseling Psychology who are seeking intensive clinical experience working with complex trauma in a survivor-centered, low-barrier setting.

Time Commitment & Structure

  • Two-semester commitment required

  • Schedule determined in alignment with academic requirements

  • Internship takes place primarily at Restore’s Midtown Manhattan office

  • Interns are expected to maintain a clinical caseload of approximately 8–10 clients and allocate remaining internship hours to documentation, supervision, training, and team meetings

Specific Responsibilities

  • Provide trauma-informed individual counseling to adult survivors of trafficking under clinical supervision

  • Implement Restore NYC’s counseling curriculum, including intake, assessment, safety planning, and treatment planning

  • Support clients in trauma processing, emotional regulation, and development of coping skills

  • Identify and respond to clinical risk, consulting with licensed supervisors as needed

  • Complete accurate, timely clinical documentation in Restore’s client data management system in compliance with HIPAA and professional ethical standards

  • Participate in required supervision, evaluations, learning agreements, and academic documentation

  • Attend weekly individual supervision, peer intern group supervision, trainings, case consultations, and team meetings

  • Prepare for supervision through case reflection, questions, and required process recordings

  • Collaborate with Client Services staff to support continuity of care and interdisciplinary coordination

  • Communicate professionally and practice trauma-informed, culturally responsive, survivor-centered engagement in all interactions

  • Assist across Client Services programs as appropriate and within capacity

Qualifications

Required

  • Currently pursuing a Master’s degree from an accredited program in:

    • Social Work

    • Mental Health Counseling

    • Counseling Psychology

  • Strong commitment to working with survivors of trafficking and individuals impacted by trauma

  • Ability to engage in emotionally complex clinical work with appropriate boundaries

  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail

  • Openness to feedback and clinical supervision

  • Responsiveness, professionalism, and reliability

Preferred

  • Prior experience working with adults impacted by trauma

  • Prior clinical or counseling experience in a supervised setting

  • Prior exposure to anti-trafficking, gender-based violence, or immigrant-serving work

  • Bilingual fluency in Spanish or Mandarin

Professional Expectations

Compensation

This is an unpaid internship. Academic credit is required and supervision hours will be provided in accordance with program requirements.

Job Location

This job is based in New York City and is an on-site position, requiring all internship days in our Midtown office.
