The Opportunity
Recurrent Ventures is looking for a beast of a Director of Audience Strategy & Growth- a strategic, creative leader who knows how to make audiences move and how to make that movement matter. Reporting to the VP of Marketing, this person will be a key member of the marketing leadership team, responsible for overseeing the social and email teams, shaping how we grow, engage, and monetize audiences while driving collaboration across editorial, commerce, and revenue functions.
The ideal candidate is part storyteller, part operator — someone who knows a winning subject line with their eyes closed, never buries the lede, and understands that traffic alone doesn’t cut it anymore. They chase RPMs like a true performance marketer but protect audience trust like a brand builder.
They can move seamlessly between brands and personalities with ease, cultivating diverse teams that thrive on creativity and accountability. This role is about building strategy, shaping teams, and uniting those teams around a shared vision for audience health and monetization.
This is not a maintenance role. It’s a mission. The right person will utilize tools and teams to turn audience engagement into a business engine and define what success looks like in the next era of digital publishing.
Key Responsibilities
Audience Growth & Platform Strategy

Work with closely editorial, revenue, and marketing leads to develop a comprehensive audience strategy, and execute across social media, email, and referral channels to drive sustainable growth, engagement, and monetization.

Own the health and expansion of Recurrent’s audiences across platforms, ensuring brand consistency while tailoring strategies to each platform’s strengths.

Partner with Revenue Growth and Commerce teams to translate engagement into monetized opportunities — optimizing for conversions, affiliate performance, and sponsorships.

Identify emerging platforms and technologies that can accelerate growth or unlock new audience segments.
Leadership & Channel Ownership

Lead, mentor, and develop the social and email teams, establishing and tracking clear goals around engagement, retention, and ROI.

Foster a culture of creative experimentation backed by data-driven insights.

Drive alignment and transparency between marketing, editorial, and commerce strategies to ensure consistent messaging and performance across the full user journey.
Data Strategy & Audience Intelligence

Own Recurrent’s first-party audience data and segmentation strategy, ensuring collection, quality, and activation of data to support marketing and revenue goals.

Champion a data-informed approach to social and email growth, ensuring every decision ladders up to measurable impact.
Syndication & Partnerships

Manage and optimize relationships with syndication and referral partners (Apple News, Yahoo, MSN, SmartNews, Flipboard, etc.) to maximize audience reach and RPM performance across platforms.

Continuously analyze RPMs, referral traffic quality, and audience retention to identify opportunities for growth and margin improvement.

Working with Revenue lead to develop data-backed strategies to increase yield and efficiency from existing syndication partners while expanding into new, high-value platforms.

Surface new distribution opportunities with a clear focus on scalability, audience quality, and revenue contribution.
Cross-Functional Collaboration

Collaborate with Editorial leadership to align content distribution with engagement and monetization goals.

Work closely with Revenue Growth to define shared KPIs and track the commercial performance of audience channels.

Partner with Sales, Product, and Analytics to deepen audience understanding and maximize conversion and retention across touchpoints.
Qualifications

8+ years of experience in audience development, growth marketing, or digital media, with 3+ years in a leadership capacity.

Proven ability to connect audience growth and engagement to revenue outcomes through innovative, data-driven strategies.

Experience managing social, email, or audience growth teams with an emphasis on measurable results.

Strong analytical and strategic thinking skills, with experience using analytics tools such as Google Analytics, Looker, Chartbeat, or Parse.ly.

Excellent cross-functional collaboration and communication skills.

Education: Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Communications, or Business or equivalent professional experience in audience development, digital media, or a related field.
