Since 1973, the Boston Area Rape Crisis Center (BARCC) has been a leader in the movement to end sexual violence. BARCC empowers survivors of sexual violence to heal and provides education and advocacy for the social change needed to create cultures that prevent sexual violence. The role
The Health and Medical Advocacy Program is looking for a new full time Medical Advocacy Volunteer Coordinator. You’ll lead a strong, large (50+ people) emergency response team of volunteers who support survivors in the 19 area hospitals. You’ll work directly with the Health and Medical Advocacy Program Manager to continue to develop and grow the medical advocacy team.

Where and when you’ll work
BARCC's staff, operations, hours, and location vary by function, type of work, and work style. You'll primarily work from our Boston office, with regular travel to our Cambridge office as well.

This is a 40-hour, full-time position. You can expect to work regularly Monday through Friday. Exact schedule may be flexible depending on your availability. Tuesday evenings are required. One additional evening shift required, and occasional late nights and weekend work during volunteer recruitment and training.

What you’ll do

Volunteer Coordination and Support
  • Schedule and facilitate biweekly volunteer group meetings, including creating annual plan of topics and staying in tune to the continued skill-building needs of volunteers.
  • Schedule and facilitate monthly meeting for peer supervisors, providing supervision, guidance, and leadership opportunities to volunteer peer leaders.
  • Collaborate with volunteer coordinator and management team on volunteer recruitment with a focus on increased diversity, equity, and inclusion practices.
  • Promote volunteer retention and engagement by designing and implementing appropriate recognition and appreciation practices.
  • Ensure the smooth operations of 24-7 emergency Medical Advocacy program, including high-quality services, appropriate response times, and other guidelines.
  • Provide support to volunteers, offering opportunities to debrief cases with an emphasis on self-care practices to manage impact of vicarious trauma and promote sustainable wellness.
  • Collaborate with BARCC’s direct service team and volunteer coordinators on projects and program operations.
  • Supervise one academic year and one summer intern per year.

Training
  • Serve as lead training facilitator for medical advocacy–specific sections in BARCC’s 40-hour Rape Crisis Counselor (RCC) Training (four times a year).
  • Collaborate with the health and medical advocacy program manager for support as a co-facilitator of training curriculum.
  • Assess and make improvements to training for new medical advocates.
  • Recruit and interview prospective medical advocates for each RCC training.
  • Identify, develop, and implement volunteer professional development opportunities.

Survivor Support
  • Collect and report on program data monthly and annually, focusing on service delivery, volunteer timesheets, case logs, toxicology calls, and incident reports.
  • Follow up with survivors as requested and connect to services for continued care.
  • Collaborate with other BARCC staff and teams to ensure survivors needs are being met.
Administration and On Call Duties
  • Manage a 24-hour schedule, ensuring that details are up to date and accurate, and that full coverage is scheduled.
  • Oversee the smooth operation and logistics of program’s 24-7 pager system.
  • Be on call three to four times per week to respond to hospitals and dispatch medical advocates to the hospital.


You’ll bring
  • Two to three years of direct volunteer management or leadership experience.
  • Experience or comfort in working directly with clients in related fields, such as sexual and/or intimate partner violence, reproductive health, teen dating violence, suicide prevention, shelter access. Comfort with providing trauma-informed care.
  • The ability to be organized, solutions focused, and detail oriented in crisis situations.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills to connect with volunteers and survivors easily, develop trust, and offer support.
  • Collaborative team spirit that values and respects diverse perspectives in a multidisciplinary team.
  • Flexibility and understanding that emergency response programs are occasionally unpredictable.
  • A commitment to BARCC’s mission and philosophy.
  • Working knowledge of trauma-informed care preferred.

Starting salary range and benefits
$40,000–$44,000 starting salary, depending on experience and skills. The total compensation package includes a generous benefits package, including health, dental, vacation, sick time, and other coverage options.
