Job Overview
Sequoyah School seeks a dynamic educator to lead and teach in its high school Spanish program. This department chair and faculty member will inspire students to engage with Spanish language and culture through a communicative approach where authentic experience with language and culture is prioritized. The department chiar is also acts as a member of the Program Administrators team, a leadership group at the high school that collaboratively advances the vision of the high school program and supports the overall mission and growth of Sequoyah as a K-12 school.
The full-time faculty position responsibilities include:

Teach a combination of 4 sections per year and 2 sections per semester of Spanish courses (including honors-level Sequoyah Advanced Studies courses)

Teach one section of an elective for one semester

Facilitate Spanish language tertulias (weekly conversation groups)

Act as an Advisor to a group of 10-12 students

Facilitate a group in the Social Innovation Program (SIP) during the weekly SIP block

Supervise Talking Leaves presentations twice a year

Act as a chaperone and driver for a camping trip once per year (with optional second trip)

Attend Morning Meetings daily
Leadership
- Act as a leader in the high school, leading the Spanish program and supporting the work of other programs
- Attend Program Administrator meetings twice a month
- Meet with the Director of Teaching and Learning regularly
- Coordinate the Spanish Program curriculum, assessment and instructional practices, developing a vision and a theory of action to achieve it
- Act as an instructional coach for the department
- Represent the school for admissions, accreditation, and other venues
- Manage the Department budget
- Ensure departmental outcomes meet external standards (like ACTFL), as well as needs of the college admissions office
- Act as a supervisor to department members, adhering to supervision guidelines and standards
Qualifications
- Qualified candidates must have a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience and must have experience teaching Spanish language
- A bachelor's degree is required, a master's or PhD preferred
- Native or near native fluency in Spanish
- Experience in a leadership role

- Interest in participating in field studies/camping trips

- Demonstrated sensitivity to, and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of high school students
