HIGH SCHOOL BIOLOGY & ECOLOGY FACULTY POSITION

 

School Overview 

Sequoyah School is an independent K-12 day school in Pasadena, California, offering an innovative college-preparatory curriculum in a student-centered, experiential, humanistic environment. The school offers a developmentally appropriate program from elementary grades through high school. In keeping with its mission, “A Sequoyah education challenges the mind, nurtures the heart, and celebrates human dignity,” the school’s program supports a student’s social and emotional growth alongside their academic progress. The school was founded in 1958 and expanded its highly regarded elementary and junior high program to include a high school in 2016. The high school and K-8 divisions are located on separate campuses just 1.5 miles apart.

 

We are currently accepting applications for an immediate start/for the 2026-2027 school year.

 

Full-time (10 month)

Reports to the Science Department Chair

Salary Range: $68,000-$111,588

 

The full-time faculty position responsibilities include:

  • Teach a combination of 3 sections of life science/biology courses (Examples: Biology, SAS Biology: Macro Systems, and an advanced “SAS” Ecology or other environmental science-focused class for 11th/12th grades)

  • Teach one section of Statistics (or other math course)

  • Teach one section of an elective for one semester (Examples: Science of Flavor, Microbes and Infection)

  • Act as an Advisor to a group of 10-12 students

  • Facilitate a group in the Social Innovation Program (SIP) during the weekly SIP block

  • Supervise Talking Leaves presentations twice a year 

  • Act as a chaperone and driver for a camping trip once per year (with optional second trip)

  • Mentor a student club or Stewardship committee

  • Attend Morning Meetings daily

Qualifications

  • Qualified candidates must have a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience and must have experience teaching biology, ecology, or a related field. 

  • A bachelor's degree is required, a master's or PhD preferred.

  • Strong interpersonal skills

  • Demonstrated leadership experience in a K-12 school setting

  • Demonstrated interest in inquiry-based, experiential, and deeper learning and competency-based assessment

  • Interest in participating in field studies/camping trips

  • Interest in interdisciplinary learning and teaching

  • Teach from an inclusive, anti-racist standpoint

  • Demonstrated sensitivity to, and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of high school students

The anticipated salary range the School reasonably expects to pay candidates for this position is $68,000-$111,588, depending on factors such as experience or education.
