Roles and Responsibilities

Substitute Teacher responsibilities include:

  • Take attendance in accordance with school procedures. 

  • Supervise classroom of absent teacher 

  • Teach provided lesson plan 

  • Maintain a functioning classroom 

  • Inform the Office Manager if an accepted job cannot be filled 

  • Keep updated personal and contact information with the Office Manager 

  • Create a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of the students 

  • Guide the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals and objectives as indicated in the lesson plans for the lessons, units, or projects assigned 

  • Employ instructional methods and materials that are most appropriate for meeting lesson objectives 

  • Maintains a neat and orderly classroom. Straightens chairs, tables, clears white board, etc. 

  • Indicate to students at beginning of class the basic expectations for behavior in the class in accordance with the school

  • Ensure that the students are never left unattended in the classroom. 

  • Know emergency evacuation routes for the classrooms assigned. 

  • Know procedures for referring students who are having disciplinary issues. 

  • Know school procedures and regulations. 

  • Performs other related duties as directed by Office Manager or Division Director 

Qualifications

We are seeking candidates who have:

  • Experience working with children or teens in educational settings

  • Ability to adapt quickly and support student-centered learning

  • Strong communication and classroom management skills

  • Commitment to inclusion, equity, and respectful community norms

  • Comfort teaching across multiple subjects and/or age groups

  • Openness to feedback and collaboration with faculty and staff

  • Alignment with Sequoyah’s mission and Habits of Mind

Minimum Requirements:

  • Clean DOJ and FBI Background Check (livescan) 

  • Mandated Reporter Training
