About the Role:

Communities In Schools (CIS) is launching a targeted campaign to expand access through state law, regulation or executive order to integrated student supports (e.g. wraparound services) to students in need. In collaboration with the Vice President of Policy, the principal for state policy will lead the development and implementation of this state-level strategy. CIS anticipates campaign work in 3-5 states in fiscal year 2019-2020, with additional to follow if the campaign is successful.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • State campaign work – 75%
  • Network technical assistance on public funding – 20%
  • Management of state-level lobbying grants – 5%

Additional responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Developing and executing a state-level campaign
  • Building relationships with governors' offices, state legislators, and state education chiefs.
  • Identification of champions, coalitions and third-party validators.
  • Leading communications efforts among the coalitions in each state.
  • Working with CIS state affiliates to access public funding through direct technical assistance, webinars, and white papers.

*CIS provides a small number of grants to CIS state affiliates for state-level lobbying. He/she will also oversee all grantmaking for CIS state affiliates for lobbying.

About You:

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in public policy, political science, law or research and evaluation or related field
  • Minimum of 8 years of experience leading issue advocacy campaigns and state-level policymaking.

Other skills include but are not limited to:

  • Successful track record of navigating a state-level legislative process
  • Strong communication and writing skills.
  • Experience presenting at conferences and legislative briefings.
  • Experience with or extensive knowledge of accessing public funding sources through the U.S. Department of Education, Health and Human Services, or Department of Justice.
  • Extensive knowledge of advocacy and stakeholder engagement strategies.
