POSITION OVERVIEW

The Advocacy Communications Specialist is central to advancing the policy voice and public presence of Changent. This role develops compelling, accessible communications that elevate policy priorities and spotlight stakeholder voices. The Communications Specialist works closely across teams to implement nonpartisan advocacy and policy communications strategies designed to inform, engage, and influence policymakers, partners, and the public.

 

As part of our communications framework, this role will work closely with the Communications team to align advocacy messaging with cross-functional campaigns, editorial priorities, and organizational brand standards. The role will also participate in content calendaring, message alignment, and performance measurement across advocacy efforts.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

60% | Strategic Advocacy Communications

  • Draft, format, and disseminate high-quality materials such as fact sheets, briefs, advocacy statements, talking points, action alerts, and blog posts.
  • Translate complex policy and research topics into clear, engaging, and accessible content for policymakers, advocates, and the public.
  • Support content development for our website, newsletters, and social media channels to highlight advocacy priorities and surface thought leadership.
  • Work closely with policy and communications colleagues to keep messaging consistent across campaigns and initiatives.
  • Collaborate with Communications team to make sure advocacy content reflects our brand voice, visual standards, and narrative strategy.
  • Participate in editorial planning meetings and manage content calendars.
  • Coordinate with the Marketing team to improve email delivery, segmentation, and campaign performance.
  • Track engagement and analytics to guide future advocacy communications.

 

20% | Advocacy Resources & Stakeholder Support

  • Create and maintain advocacy toolkits, templates, and other materials to help partners engage in campaigns.
  • Support partners and stakeholders with communications guidance and technical assistance for advocacy campaigns or events.
  • Collect feedback on materials, track usage, and update content to keep it relevant and useful.
  • Help build the organization’s capacity for storytelling and public-policy engagement.

 

20% | Campaigns & Public Engagement

  • Support planning, promotion, and execution of advocacy-related webinars, briefings, and public events.
  • Draft event communications, including invitations, talking points, press materials, and follow-up summaries.
  • Coordinate event logistics, registration, and event promotion.
  • Work with the Policy & Government Affairs and Marketing teams on media strategy for advocacy events and policy announcements.
  • Contribute to integrated campaigns that combine advocacy, storytelling, stakeholder engagement, and digital outreach.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, public policy, political science, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
  • At least 2 years of experience in advocacy, public policy communications, external affairs, or campaign work.

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Demonstrated ability to draft and edit written materials for public audiences, including policy briefs, action alerts, and digital content.
  • Strong storytelling and plain-language writing skills, with the ability to translate complex policy issues into accessible narratives for diverse audiences.
  • Excellent verbal communication, project management, and organizational skills; ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.
  • Track record of meeting deadlines while maintaining attention to detail.
  • Experience using digital advocacy tools and platforms, such as Quorum.
  • Experience tracking engagement and reporting analytics across communication channels.
  • Ability to adapt messaging for different audiences, including institutional partners, funders, policymakers, advocates, and the public.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity with early childhood, maternal health, human services, or related policy areas.
  • Experience coordinating or supporting advocacy events, “Hill Days,” or public-policy campaigns.
  • Basic proficiency with design or content tools, such as  Canva or Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Understanding of strategic communications principles, including audience segmentation, message framing, and coalition messaging alignment.
  • Strong project coordination skills, especially in managing priorities across multiple stakeholders and workstreams.

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

This position reports to the Senior Manager, Advocacy and does not have any direct reports.
