Salary: $18-$30/hour (depending on experience). Mileage reimbursement also available.

Commitment: 30-35 hours/week

Program Locations: Waltham, Dorchester, Chelsea, and Somerville (1 week at each location- see below for details)

 

Job Description:

Join Girlstart's efforts to educate and empower girls this summer! Girlstart’s Summer Counselors (called STEM CREW -- Creative, Resourceful, Empowered Workforce) work directly with elementary school girls, leading hands-on science, technology, engineering, and math activities at weekly, in-person day programs in the Boston area. Enhance your leadership and teamwork skills, improve your presentation and communication skills, build your problem solving, critical thinking, and decision-making abilities all while being a positive and meaningful role model for girls! Successful STEM CREW need to be comfortable traveling to and from their program location, ready to work hard and most importantly, understand that Girlstart can't control everything going into a new environment so they need to be flexible. Additionally, Girlstart relies on this team of STEM CREW to be the face of our organization and we need to know and trust that the team can make the best decisions based on the situation at hand. Anyone from college students to veteran teachers are welcome to apply!

Responsibilities:

  • Lead program curriculum focused on science, technology, engineering and math (previous STEM experience not required, curriculum and materials provided by Girlstart)

  • Implement and run daily program activities

  • Learn and implement the Girlstart method within program environment 

  • Modify activities as needed accommodate any unique program scenarios 

  • Be prepared to lead icebreakers, organize materials, practice/setup technology, etc.

  • Facilitate classroom management techniques

  • Act as a positive role model for girls

  • HAVE FUN!!!

  • Other duties as needed

 

Qualifications:

  • Teacher certification preferred or related experience in youth programming

  • Positive, friendly, flexible and outgoing

  • Self-motivated with the ability to work as a team player and foster cooperative work 

  • Reliable, dependable, and timely 

  • Effective organization skills and ability to manage multiple priorities effectively 

  • Excellent communication skills

  • Personal qualities of integrity, credibility and a commitment to the mission of Girlstart

  • Experience working at summer camps and/or out of school time programming 

  • Knowledge of educational learning standards and best practices for classroom management 

  • Comfortable presenting to a group of youth

 

All STEM CREW Counselors Must:

  • Attend mandatory hybrid training (Week of June 17th)

  • Work the complete duration of the program's ideal schedule approximately 7:45am-5:00pm (hours vary from program to program and exceptions can be discussed) **Note: It is NOT required that you are available for all program locations/dates!**

  • Pass a background and fingerprint check, be or become First Aid/CPR certified, and obtain a Sexual Abuse Awarenesss certificate (Girlstart will provide additional information upon hire) 

  • Abide by partners’ requirements to work with youth
