Job Title: Director of Development 

Location: Hybrid, including mandatory bi-annual staff retreats in Durham, NC

Reports to: Chief Advancement Officer (CAO) 

 

Background: 

Family Connects International (FCI) is an independent 501c3 non-profit, that provides training, implementation support, and national leadership for the expansion of the evidenced-based Family Connects Model, developed at Duke University. The Family Connects model is a community-based program supporting new parents in caring for their newborns, offering physical assessments of the postpartum person and infant, addressing questions about caring for a newborn, providing supportive guidance, and helping them access any needed community services or resources.   

 

Occupational Summary: 

We are seeking a highly motivated and results-driven Director of Development to join our team. The successful candidate will play a crucial role in expanding our fundraising efforts to support the organization’s growth and impact. The Director of Development will be responsible for developing and implementing comprehensive fundraising strategies, cultivating donor relationships, and securing financial support from individuals, corporations, and foundations. 

 

Key Deliverables: 

 

1. Develop and Implement Fundraising Strategies: 

  • In partnership with the Chief Advancement Officer, create and lead the execution of comprehensive fundraising plans to meet annual revenue goals. 

  • Identify and prioritize fundraising opportunities, including grant opportunities, corporate partnerships, and major gifts. 

2. Donor Cultivation and Stewardship: 

  • Manage the donor database. 

  • Maintain strong relationships with existing and potential donors in collaboration with the CAO, CEO, and Board of Directors. 

  • Implement and maintain effective stewardship practices to ensure donor retention and engagement. 

  • In partnership with the Chief Advancement Officer, develop personalized cultivation strategies for major donors and key collaborators. 

3. Grant Writing and Proposal Development: 

  • Research and identify relevant grant opportunities. 

  • Lead the creation of compelling grant proposals to secure funding from foundations, corporations, and government sources. 

4. Event Planning and Execution 

  • Organize and coordinate fundraising events to engage donors and raise awareness. 

 5. Collaboration and Communication 

  • Work closely with the marketing and communications team to create fundraising campaigns. 

  • Collaborate with internal teams to ensure compliance with grant requirements and nonprofit regulations. 

6. Data Management and Reporting 

  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date donor records. 

  • Write regular reports to funders. 

 

Required Qualifications: 

  •  Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field (e.g., business, nonprofit management, communications). 
  • At least 5 years of nonprofit fundraising experience. 

  • Proven track record of successfully meeting or exceeding fundraising targets. 

  • Experience across multiple revenue streams (individual, corporate, grants) 

  • Proven knowledge of donor cultivation, major gifts, and fundraising campaign design and execution strategies 

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. 

  • Strong organizational and project management skills. 

  • Experience and comfort with delivering formal presentations, both in person and virtually. 

 

 

Pay Band: $95,000-$115,000 per year; alignment within pay band based on direct relevant experience. All travel expenses are covered under FCI policy. 

*This position is mostly remote and available nationwide with some required travel for development meetings, all staff meetings, or external events.

 

Physical Requirements: 

  • Extended sitting (up to 8 hours per day). 
  • Keyboarding 

  • Ability to work in different (changing) locations and environments. 

  • Ability to travel in air, train, and car.
