Position - Associate, Lupus Ventures
Reports to: Managing Director, Lupus Ventures
Location: Remote (US-based), w/occasional travel
Salary: $110,000 – $160,000 USD (Starting salary is approximate and may vary based on candidate qualifications and other factors)
About the Company
Lupus Ventures is the venture investment fund of the Lupus Research Alliance. The Fund is dedicated to advancing treatment and diagnostic options for systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), its manifestations, and related autoimmune conditions.
The Fund is backed by the Lupus Research Alliance, a disease research organization founded by Robert Wood “Woody” Johnson IV. To date, the Lupus Research Alliance has awarded more than $284 million across 650+ research grants, and clinical affiliate Lupus Therapeutics is involved in 25-30% of active clinical trials. This provides the Fund with a unique, dedicated bench of expertise in autoimmunity.
About the Role:
The Associate will play an integral role in the investment team, supporting all aspects of the deal lifecycle, from sourcing and screening opportunities to executing transactions and monitoring portfolio performance. The position offers exposure to a wide range of investment activities, and direct interaction with an Investment Committee composed of experienced venture capital investors, senior pharmaceutical executives, and senior basic science and clinical research experts.
Key Responsibilities
- Deal Sourcing and Screening - Identify, evaluate, and prioritize investment opportunities within biopharma, med-tech, and diagnostics. Conduct preliminary assessments of company fit with Lupus Ventures investment criteria and fund strategy.
- Due Diligence - Support comprehensive due diligence processes, including scientific review, budget estimates, competitive landscape assessments, IP review, clinical development pathway, regulatory analysis, and financial modeling.
- Investment Execution - Assist in preparing investment memos, models, and presentation materials for the Investment Committee. Coordinate with advisors and consultants across scientific, technical, and regulatory workstreams.
- Market Research and Sector Insights - Maintain a deep understanding of industry trends, scientific advancements, and M&A activity across autoimmune conditions, specifically SLE and its related manifestations.
- Business Development & Operations - Contribute to thought leadership articles and Fund marketing materials. Attend conferences and build awareness of the Fund. Contribute to Fund operations, including pipeline management, finance, and legal.
Skills & Experience
We are looking for highly motivated, well-rounded team players who are passionate about investing and want to build a long-term career in life sciences venture capital:
- Strong scientific, analytical and financial skills
- Comfort with evaluating scientific pathways in immunology and preclinical/ clinical data
- Experience in pharma BD, consulting, investment banking, public market investing, venture capital, private equity, preferred, but not required
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to distill complex topics clearly and concisely.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, wear ‘multiple hats’, and keen to take on responsibilities
- Entrepreneurial mindset and ability to work independently within a small, collaborative team.
- Genuine passion for healthcare innovation and improving patient outcomes.
Background
- MD or PhD in Immunology is welcomed
- Work experience in life sciences is preferred
- 1 - 3 years of experience in academic or clinical research, investment banking, consulting, private equity, venture capital, or corporate development, ideally with exposure to healthcare or life sciences
Location
- Remote - limited travel to New York, and/or NJ/NY/PA area may be required.
