About NYAAF

Founded in 2001, the New York Abortion Access Fund supports New Yorkers and people traveling to New York State to access abortion care through financial assistance, case management, and connections to other resources. For twenty years, NYAAF operated as a volunteer collective. In September 2022, we hired our first staff person and are now a small but mighty team of six made up of people with deep community ties—including people of color, people who have had abortions and used abortion funds, parents, and former abortion fund volunteers.

Following the Supreme Court ruling in Dobbs  to overturn Roe v. Wade, more people than ever are traveling to New York to access the abortion care they need and deserve. However, more than half of our callers remain resident New Yorkers, because while New York is much more abortion friendly than other states, many barriers still exist. NYAAF directly fills the gaps created by these barriers and has made abortion access a reality for thousands of callers. Since the overturn of Roe in June 2022, NYAAF has moved more than 7.7 million dollars to fund abortion care and supported more than 11,000 callers from 41 states and US territories, as well as 26 countries.

Mission

NYAAF works to make abortion accessible for anyone living in or traveling to New York through direct funding, holistic support, and trusted connections. We foster community care and build collective power to dismantle barriers, shift systems, and advance reproductive justice.

Vision

We envision a world rooted in joy, dignity, and self-determination, where all people have the power to make decisions about their bodies and futures. In this world, communities have what they need to thrive, and abortion is accessible, trusted, and celebrated as a fundamental part of bodily autonomy, healthcare and human rights.

Grounded in the principles of reproductive justice, we recognize that true liberation requires abolishing harmful systems of exploitation and oppression that criminalize care, deny resources, and perpetuate inequity. These systems include patriarchy, capitalism, white supremacy and anti-Blackness, imperialism, ableism, and more. At NYAAF, we work with humility, solidarity, and care, centering those most impacted by reproductive injustices as we build toward a future of collective liberation.

Values

Collective liberation is both our long-term vision and our everyday practice. We strive to embody the values outlined here, grounding ourselves in who we are, shaping how we show up with others, and guiding every aspect of our strategy.

  • Joy and Pleasure

  • Lived Experience

Brief Description of Role

Reporting to and working in close partnership with the Intake Manager and Intake Team leadership at the New York Abortion Access Fund (NYAAF), this internship is designed as a structured learning experience to introduce emerging leaders to abortion access work within a rapidly evolving reproductive justice landscape. Interns support the intake team as it responds to increasing demand for services and the diverse, time-sensitive needs of callers seeking financial assistance for abortion care, including those traveling from out of state.

The intake team consists of a Program Director, Intake Manager, Intake Coordinator, and a network of 70+ volunteer case managers who manage NYAAF’s call lines. Interns will gain supervised exposure to client-centered, trauma-informed support and will assist with administrative components of intake work that help ensure callers are connected to care efficiently and respectfully. Rooted in NYAAF’s commitment to reproductive justice, the internship is also a way for the organization to invest in a new generation of thoughtful, ethical, and community-minded leaders.
