iMentor builds mentoring relationships that empower students from under-resourced communities to graduate high school, succeed in college, and achieve their ambitions.  iMentor partners with public schools and matches every student in the school with a college-educated mentor who commits a minimum of three years to a single student. Mentor-mentee pairs work together through the iMentor curriculum, which is designed around four core outcomes: Developing strong personal relationships between mentors and mentees; Growing each mentee’s college aspiration; Developing the non-cognitive skills critical to success in college; and Successfully navigating the college exploration, application, financial aid, and transition process.

Since 1999, iMentor has connected more than 25,000 students with mentors. This year, iMentor is serving 550 mentor-mentee pairs in the Bay Area and 7,100 more nationwide. In 2016, the San Francisco Bay Area became iMentor’s first region on the West Coast.

Position Overview

iMentor is seeking a dynamic, creative and entrepreneurial professional to recruit volunteer mentors for iMentor’s Bay Area’s mentoring program. Reporting to the Director of Corporate & Community Engagement, the Manager of Volunteer Recruitment (MVR) will be responsible for supporting the design and execution of corporate and community engagement and outreach initiatives to mobilize a pool of high-quality, well-prepared mentors to drive college success outcomes for our mentees. The MVR will do this by building and maintaining new partnerships with a wide variety of community groups, corporations, small businesses, and associations, with a focus on building a volunteer mentor base that represents the diversity of the Bay Area, with a particular focus on San Jose.

The MVR will implement a recruitment strategy that is both scalable and sustainable as the Bay Area program prepares to grow to nearly 1,000 pairs by 2018. The Manager, Volunteer Recruitment will play a critical role in ensuring that iMentor mobilizes and engages a pool of high-quality, well-prepared mentors to drive college success outcomes for our mentees.

The ideal candidate will have experience in, community relations, recruitment, admissions, front-line fundraising, partnership development, CSR or alumni affairs. They will be a natural networker who is able to build and maintain a strong bridge to the communities iMentor serves throughout the city. The MVR must have strong project management skills, a focus on details, follow through and results, and will be motivated and energized by ambitious goals.

Responsibilities

  • Support the development and execution of an outreach and mentor recruitment strategy that keeps pace with iMentor’s growth, resulting in a pool of high-quality, well-prepared mentors who reflect the diversity of the region
  • Identify and pursue high potential recruitment opportunities, which include attending and presenting at speaking engagements, networking events, and leveraging digital/social media recruitment channels
  • Devise new, innovative approaches to recruitment outreach and our selection process of qualified volunteers
  • Maintain accurate records in Salesforce, and collect and analyze data to assess the performance of current recruitment initiatives and inform future mentor outreach strategies
  • Lead scheduling and logistic planning for mentor orientations and other trainings
  • Organize and lead mentor orientations and training, communicating with mentors pre- and post- training to ensure high training attendance, follow through and successful preparation of volunteer mentors to enroll in our program
  • Some travel required: 20-25% within Bay Area (San Jose and Oakland primarily); transportation not provided
  • Conduct prospect and meeting preparation research for the Director of Corporate & Community Engagement, as well as other project and administrative support for recruitment initiatives
  • Manage communications and follow up with prospective partner organizations, groups, and individuals, acting as the 'face of the organization' and ensuring a superior recruitment process and volunteer experience
  • Grow corporate and community partnerships for increased participation; meet ambitious recruitment targets to support organizational growth
  • Support iMentor organization-wide initiatives, requiring 1-2 evenings per week during peak recruitment season (May-September) evening and/or weekend events
Qualifications

  • Minimum of 4 years of work experience, with at least 2 years of experience in recruitment, marketing, community organizing, volunteer engagement and/or partnership development
  • Experience working in the Bay Area, and a deep understanding of San Jose communities preferred
  • Strong networker who has the natural ability to build bridges with a wide variety of people and communities, connect people with causes, and engage them to take action
  • Entrepreneurial, resourceful and persistent, comfortable with ambiguity
  • Strong critical thinking skills, with the ability to analyze data, recognize trends, and make recommendations
  • Skilled project manager who can identify needs, scope projects, implement strategy and juggle lots of moving pieces to see something through
  • Strong public speaking, writing and interpersonal skills with the ability to motivate a wide variety of people; intuitive, empathic communicator who can quickly build rapport, trust, and credibility
  • Outstanding organizational and time management skills with the ability to manage many tasks simultaneously without sacrificing thoroughness and detail
  • Customer service orientation with superior relationship-building skills
  • Quick learner and hard worker with the ability to thrive under pressure and deadlines with minimal oversight
  • Desire to work in a fast-paced, startup-like environment with aggressive growth plans; flexible and adaptive to changing priorities
  • Comfortable taking on both high- and low-level tasks and projects, from driving strategy to managing data and preparing materials for events
