About iMentor
iMentor builds mentoring relationships that empower students in low-income communities to graduate high school, succeed in college, and achieve their ambitions. Students work with their mentors one-on-one, in-person and online, to develop strong personal relationships, nurture a college aspiration, navigate the college application process, and build critical skills that lead to college success. In New York City, iMentor partners with public schools to ensure every student in the schools receives a mentor. iMentor also provides its curriculum, technology, and best practices to help nonprofits run effective programs in the iMentor model. Position Overview
The Interim Program Manager will work with mentor and mentee pairs to facilitate high-impact relationships to ensure student success to and through college. They will work closely with 12th grade pairs at the International High School at Lafayette. They will work closely with the Program Director and Supervising Program Manager to support mentor and mentee pairs via curriculum engagement, facilitating monthly events (workshops), baseline pair support, and by providing individual in-class coaching for mentees. The duration of this temporary/part-time position will be from November 2017 until March of 2018.

The ideal candidate should have 2 or more years of professional experience working with high-school youth in school-based settings, after-school programming and/or experience in college guidance counseling. Candidates may also possess experience in youth development, college success programming, or academic coaching/tutoring. Candidates must display a passion for working in a dynamic education environment and the ability to learn quickly. Applicants must also display strong communication skills, a strong customer service orientation, and the ability to connect with and motivate individuals of all ages and backgrounds.

Responsibilities
Mentor/Mentee Pair Support
  • Support relationships between mentee/mentor pairs, including monitoring in-class participation; providing individualized attention for students in class sessions; and identify pair support issues .
  • Foster college-going culture within classroom to progress mentees toward college access goals.
Classroom Sessions and Events
  • Lead weekly iMentor classroom sessions for 12th grade mentees at school-site. Effectively, use classroom time to develop college aspiration, growth mindset and other non-cognitive skills critical for academic and personal success by encouraging the development of mentor-mentee relationships, and by making the curriculum engaging and relevant to students.
  • Create organized lesson plans and class activities tied to specific curricular outcomes to help mentees develop well-written correspondence to their mentors.
  • Work with students to monitor in-class progress via online platform. Follow up with students to ensure completion of lessons.
  • Work with Supervising Program Manager to organize and staff 2 weeknight workshops per month from November - March (topics will include career aspiration, skill development, and college access). They will work with the Program Operations team to manage event logistics, content, and budgets.
  • Motivate and encourage students to attend monthly and ad hoc meetings outside of scheduled events to build connections with their mentors.
Curriculum Collaboration and Delivery
  • Deliver iMentor’s curriculum content to students in class sessions on a weekly basis. Conduct weekly class discussions aligned with curriculum to help support students in writing weekly emails to mentors.
Partner Site Coordination and Collaboration
  • Work closely with Program Director to share site updates, participation data, and pair support concerns in order to inform conversations with partner site staff.
  • Work with assigned partner site co-teachers and advisors within classroom setting to monitor classroom sessions and student participation.
  • Monitor incoming emails and calls from mentors and log support hours.

Qualifications
  • 2 + years of professional experience in classroom facilitation/management, academic coaching, youth development, and/or a school-based program working with large groups of adolescents.
  • Strong interest in interacting with youth in a results-oriented classroom or school setting and engaging individual students in college exploration activities.
  • Interest in working directly with people from various backgrounds, including high school students, families, and working adults.
  • Demonstrated effective persistence with a ‘can-do’ positive attitude.
  • Excellent strategic problem-solving skills with ability to ‘think on your feet’ and plan both proactively and reactively.
  • Experience in working within a standardized curriculum structure to effectively motivate students and adults to work toward both individualized and collective goals.
  • Strong organization and project management skills with ability to balance multiple priorities and high-volume tasks in a fast-paced setting.
  • Strong public speaking and interpersonal skills with experience in large-group activity facilitation, preferably with youth.
  • Able to communicate program structure and goals to students (mentees) in a clear, assertive, empathetic, and supportive way.
  • Strong customer service orientation with demonstrated support for program constituents and the ability to “follow-through” to resolve challenges.
  • Comfort with internet technology and office tools within Microsoft Office suite, including Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft Word, and Microsoft Excel.
  • Bilingual skills, particularly Spanish or Arabic, a plus.

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Employment is contingent upon the completion of a satisfactory fingerprinting and criminal background check, conducted by the Division of Human Resources at the New York City Department of Education.

Additional Details
  • Compensation: $23/hour (part-time and temporary)
  • Position Duration: November 2017 and ending in March 2018.
  • Hours per Week: 25 – 28 hours
  • Meeting and Events Schedule: Candidates must be available for class sessions, school based meetings and weeknight events from November 2017 – March 2018.
      • Class sessions are Tuesdays and Thursdays.
      • School based meetings are scheduled on Wednesday mornings.
      • Two (2) weeknight events per month
