iMentor builds mentoring relationships that empower students in low-income communities to graduate high school, succeed in college, and achieve their ambitions. Students work with their mentors one-on-one, in-person and online, to develop strong personal relationships, nurture a college aspiration, navigate the college application process, and build critical skills that lead to college success. Position Overview

iMentor is seeking a Director of Finance and Grants Management to improve and lead grants management, including creating and implementing systems for proactive monthly monitoring and financial statement preparation, budgeting and budget analysis, conducting financial modeling for strategic planning, and supporting the monthly close and year-end audit preparation. She or he will also be the primary liaison to the National and Regional Development teams in the creation of grant proposals, grant reporting and in identifying programmatic elements that could be leveraged for new fundraising.

The ideal candidate will have at least five years’ experience in grants management or financial accounting and reporting, a deep understanding of GAAP and nonprofit accounting practices and standards, and will be a reflective and analytical thinker with exceptional interpersonal skills.

 

Responsibilities

Grants management

  • Manage and sign off on all financial information, including support documentation, for grant reports and proposals
  • Design, oversee and maintain financial system for proactive monthly monitoring of all grant spending and manage all financial elements of the grant reporting process including the tracking of expenses and monthly release of restricted revenue
  • Work closely with the National Development team and Regional leadership to identify underfunded programmatic elements, ensure grant revenue recognition is in compliance with GAAP and reconciled monthly in Salesforce
  • Maintain copies of all grants, tracking receivables and reviewing all grant award letters to ensure that financial reporting requirements of funders are met

Financial planning, analysis and management

  • Play a lead role in the creation and management of our annual and multi-year budgets
  • Support National Leadership in the stewardship of iMentor’s key financial targets.
  • Prepare monthly reporting of financial performance and variance analysis of financial results by program/region/department and partners with members of the senior leadership team and departmental budget holders to provide financial and budgetary support, guidance and make recommendations regarding the use of departmental budgets
  • Build financial models and forecasting tools that allow for long-term scenario planning in support of the strategic planning process
  • Enhance the use of Financial Edge (our financial software package), which may include integrating with third party software providers, developing new reports, and creating financial dashboards

Financial operations

  • Drive operational excellence across iMentor, evaluating, refining, creating, and/or supporting systems and processes to ensure efficiency and effectiveness as we continue to grow in size and complexity
  • Prepare audit schedules and provide supporting documentation to Independent Certified Public Accountants in preparation of the annual audit
  • Provide technical expertise and leadership on the treatment of accounting issues, implementation of new non-profit accounting standards and compliance with GAAP
  • Support iMentor organization-wide initiatives, requiring occasional evening and/or weekend events

 Qualifications

  • At least five years of relevant experience in roles with increasing responsibility; preferably in grants management and/or financial accounting and reporting, non-profit experience a plus
  • Demonstrated knowledge of GAAP and nonprofit accounting practices and standards
  • Critical and reflective thinker
  • Flexible: able to adapt to changing organizational needs and priorities and juggle multiple projects at once while meeting deadlines
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills; a good listener who can motivate others through influence, manage expectations, have difficult conversations and get buy-in
  • Patient and able to successfully convey financial concepts to non-finance professionals
  • Able to adapt to changing organizational needs and priorities and juggle multiple projects at once while meeting deadlines
  • Superior professional judgement and ability to handle confidential information appropriately
  • Experience working with automated financial software systems, cloud based technology and office software. Knowledge of Blackbaud’s Financial Edge strongly preferred, familiarity with Salesforce a plus
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance required; CPA preferred
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Expert-level knowledge of Microsoft Excel; experience with pivot tables, v-lookup equations and large data sets highly desirable
