About florrent

florrent is a Massachusetts-based, minority-owned deep-tech company innovating to design and build the next generation of high-energy density ultracapacitors that will stabilize electrical grids and address critical bottlenecks for the adoption of renewable energies, electric vehicles, and net-zero buildings. Our ultracapacitors are manufactured in Western Massachusetts from abundant and regenerative hemp biomass, grown domestically in the US by Black and Indigenous farmers.

About the Job

We are seeking an R&D Cell Engineer to join our small, cross-functional team at florrent. As an R&D Cell Engineer at florrent, you will report to florrent’s Senior Materials Scientist, and work to support critical development workstreams for our high-energy density ultracapacitor solutions. In moving from prototype to commercial production, you’ll work with the team to optimize our process for scale and economic viability, always keeping a keen eye on environmental impact to deliver an equitably derived product with the potential to reshape the ultracapacitor industry.

Responsibilities

florrent is looking for an R&D Cell Engineer with experience working in a wet lab setting running materials processing and characterization, to help us build and optimize the energy storage technology in our next-generation of ultracapacitors. In this role, you will

  • Work in a small, interdisciplinary R&D team to run processes, experiments, and workflows that will help florrent quickly iterate towards commercialization of our first products.

  • Help to map ultracapacitor prototype-scale innovation into production scale quality

  • Gather data to allow R&D efforts to quickly converge on commercializable innovation

Qualifications

Don’t have all of the qualifications listed below? That’s okay, we still want to hear from you if think there’s good alignment between you and florrent!

  • BS or higher in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science/Engineering, or related fields.

  • 2+ years of relevant laboratory research (academic, industry, or government)

  • Experience fabricating and evaluating electrodes and device performance for energy storage technologies in coin and cylindrical cells

  • Experience running roll-to-roll processes like coating, calendering, and slitting

  • Hands-on experience with electrochemical testing methods such as Galvanostatic charge-discharge, cyclic voltammetry, and EIS

  • Experience in running and interpreting results from physical characterization methods such as Raman, FT-IR, BET, SEM, X-ray spectroscopies, and others

  • Experience mapping R&D-level lab innovation into scaled, semi-automated processes

  • Excellent and proactive communication skills
