Position Summary
IEN is seeking an experienced and energetic Financial Manager to join our team. The Financial Manager will play a crucial role in providing financial resource functions, including accounting, financial management and analysis, budget analysis, benefits, and risk management.
The ideal candidate will have a strong background in nonprofit accounting and financial management, with excellent communication, administrative, and organizational skills. The candidate must also demonstrate knowledge of Indigenous cultural lifeways, and values.
This is a full-time, salaried position reporting to the Director of Operations. Preference is for the candidate to be based in Bemidji, Minnesota, though remote work is a possible option, in which case, occasional travel to IEN Headquarters in Bemidji is expected. A 90-day probationary period is required, after which full employment status and benefits begin.
Requirements
🔹 Education
-
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or related field (required)

Master’s degree in a related field or MBA (preferred)
-
CPA or CMA designation (preferred)
🔹 Experience
-
5–10 years of financial management experience, including 3–5 years in the nonprofit sector

Experience with:
-
Fund accounting and restricted/unrestricted funding
-
Grant management, donor compliance, and reporting
-
Federal and foundation audits
-
🔹 Skills & Competencies
-
Strong knowledge of:
-
GAAP- Generally Accepted Accounting Principles, and rules, standards, and legal obligations for nonprofits
-
IRS 990 reporting, knowledge and experience navigating IRS complexities/ regulations for nonprofits, and helping maintain tax-exempt status

Internal controls and audit preparation
-

Proficiency with:
-
QuickBooks preferred, and general knowledge of other nonprofit accounting and management software is a plus

Excel, budgeting tools, and database/reporting systems
-

Ability to:

Develop and manage organizational programs and grant budgets
-
Prepare and communicate financial reports to leadership and the board
-
Collaborate across program, development, and administrative teams
-
Clearly explain complex financial concepts to non-financial staff, including cash flow forecasting
-
Work collaboratively within a finance and operations team that could include a Grants Manager, an Administrative Assistant, a Bookkeeper, a Tax Accountant, and others.

Proficient in grant management, developing and managing grant budgets, tracking expenditures, and financial reporting

Compensation and Benefits
Salary Range: $75,000–$90,000, based on experience, education, and training
