Jord BioScience is a fundamentally different microbial company, using microbial technologies to help other agricultural companies deliver more effective and consistent products in the marketplace. Formed in 2019 out of the University of Minnesota, we are a start-up with a unique discovery platform of over 6500 microbial isolates. Our technology enhances commercial microbial products within indigenous microbial communities to improve performance and consistency of beneficial outcomes for farmers.

Job Summary: 

We are seeking a full-time Fermentation Science Research Associate to support the fermentation components of our product development pipeline. Working closely with the Senior Fermentation Scientist, you will contribute to the design and execution of fermentation workflows that enable product discovery and delivery. This role is highly collaborative, with interactions across lab operations, data science, and crop testing teams. 

Key Responsibilities: 

  • Culture a variety of microorganisms using established laboratory methods. 

  • Execute fermentation protocols for microbial biomass production using solid-state and liquid fermentation at the bench scale. 

  • Provide fermentation support for lab and crop testing teams by producing biomass and related materials. 

  • Assist with biological assays and phenotypic characterizations when needed. 

  • Support cross-functional technical efforts as required. 

  • Maintain lab environment: manage reagent/media inventory, monitor and clean equipment, and coordinate with service providers for maintenance. 

  • Record experimental data accurately, track progress in project management software, and collaborate with data scientists on analysis. 

  • Continuously develop new skills to support the evolving needs of the company. 

 

Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in fermentation science, microbiology, biology, chemistry, or related field. 

  • Hands-on experience in microbial fermentation. 

  • Familiarity with aseptic technique and biological testing methods. 

  • Strong attention to detail and ability to follow standard operating procedures. 

  • Comfortable operating relevant lab equipment. 

  • Capable of working independently and within a collaborative team. 

  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills. 

  • Enthusiasm for working in a fast-paced, startup environment.
