GENERAL PURPOSE OF THE JOB:

The Vice President, Business Development is results-driven with a relentless focus on building mutually beneficial strategic partnerships that deliver financial resources to support the mission of Southern California University of Health Sciences (SCU) while creating an impact in the community and supporting the objectives of our corporate/business partners. The Vice President is instrumental in advancing SCU’s impact as a thought leader, advocate, and proactive change agent in the healthcare space. This individual will directly shape SCU’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) efforts and financial sustainability by creating impactful links between business, non-profit organizations, and individuals to meet our Institutional needs and objectives.


To accomplish this, this individual will build strong corporate relationships through a deep understanding of partners’ unique corporate social responsibility objectives and by providing the solutions that help them achieve those objectives, while at the same time transforming lives in our community. The Vice President will elevate conversations with new potential corporate partners to co-create their CSR goals and partner to achieve them.

The Vice President will establish and lead SCU’s role as a valued strategic partner by building and managing relationships across all levels of the organization, inspiring and leading committees of volunteers, and leveraging our leadership and Board to build C-Suite relationships. This individual will bring a robust portfolio of existing corporate relationships and will apply an understanding of partner objectives and deep knowledge of philanthropy/ engagement best practices to lead their team to acquire, retain and grow relationships.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • ·       Generate promotion and solicitation strategy and concepts including branding of a corporate relations/sponsorship program aligned with the SCU mission and vision.
  • ·       Deliver ongoing support and assistance to corporate supporters to fulfill SCU’s value proposition
  • ·       Work collaboratively across the SCU organization to access operational and infrastructure resources in the areas of marketing, communications, and finance to support the overall corporate relations and fundraising strategy.
  • ·       Serve as the principal point of contact for existing and new corporate partners and prospects, and funnel these relationships up to the Board, President & CEO, and other senior leadership as appropriate.
  • ·       Help determine and refine corporate fundraising target goals, levels of support, and related benefits for industry segments.
  • ·       Maintain reporting system to track fundraising results and assure that data is integrated into Blackbaud’s Raisers Edge.
  • ·       Work collaboratively with Marketing to develop all corporate solicitation materials, including proposals, written solicitations, sponsorship documents, personalized acknowledgments, and other marketing collateral.


Leadership & Strategy

  • ·       Develop and promote high profile, high impact corporate relations, and special events strategy that generates at least $5M in corporate sponsorship over the first 5 years and increases each year thereafter.
  • ·       Assess historical and current approaches to this work across the development and fundraising programs to develop a value proposition, strategy, and ROI model for fundraising events and corporate engagement/sponsorship.
  • ·       Provide energetic and inspiring leadership to SCU Team plus external consultants, and ensure an integrated, strategic, and entrepreneurial approach to all corporate sponsorship development, event planning, and program implementation.
  • ·       Work collaboratively with the Board, President & CEO, Cabinet, and other leadership team members to align resources and organizational relationships to support all fundraising events and corporate relations activities.


Corporate Relations/ Sponsorships


  • ·       Create the vision and execution of a robust and high-impact corporate relations strategy, including a new pipeline of corporate and community partners, sponsors, and supporters across multiple industry sectors for the purpose of securing corporate sponsorships.
  • ·       Develop a business development growth strategy that fosters long-term corporate sponsorship opportunities and philanthropic support of six- and seven-figure commitments and multi-year partnerships.
  • ·       Actively identify and source acquisition targets, including building relationships with businesses and building a deal pipeline consistent with SCU’s strategic objectives.
  • ·       “Sell” SCU’s story to the marketplace, building rapport and credibility with C suite level executives.
  • ·       Customize a case for support and/or valuation model for each potential transaction that can be used across the organization to increase corporate giving.
  • ·       Serve as an external ambassador and relationship manager with corporate and community partners.
  • ·       Structure and negotiate deals, working with the senior leadership to build increased awareness and opportunities for creating long-term value for corporate partners through the alignment of business needs and the philanthropic goals of SCU.

Donor Relationships


  • ·       Builds donor and corporate relationships and trust through a consultative approach that creates a win-win for the business, their employees, SCU and the community.
  • ·       Segments corporate and foundation donors and works with our Director of Alumni and Constituent Relations and marketing department to create strategies to acquire, retain and grow our donor relationships and meet theirs and our goals.
  • ·       Works with marketing to build a consultative, collaborative, donor/partner-centered brand that differentiates SCU and adds value to our partners.
  • ·       Recognizes the power of effective stewardship and develops a method for thanking donors, publicly recognizing donors, informing them of impact of their support, and keeping them apprised of progress in the community.
  • ·       Elevate the overall corporate environment to senior leadership to create products and offerings based on donor feedback and needs. Understands the overall corporate environment, as well as the objectives of key corporate partners.


Business Development


  • ·       Uses data analysis, trends, and insights to develop strategic plans for corporations, foundations, and individual donors.
  • ·       Consistently tracks data to evaluate opportunity and risk and engages partners and SCU leadership in timely ways to respond. Is strategic and innovative to respond to what the data is showing and collaborates with partners to revise or enact tactics in real-time to achieve goals.
  • ·       Guides team to engage internal and external partners in towards a clear path to acquire new philanthropic giving and engagement.
  • ·       Leads development of products and engagement opportunities to meet donor objectives, to deepen relationships, meet financial goals and create impact in the community.

Entrepreneurial and Innovative

  • ·       Identifies, anticipates, and adapts to changing market trends and business needs; understands local business environment; solid understanding of SCU Mission, Vision, and impact.
  • ·       Stays current in technical aspects of the field such as tax laws and applies the latest information in trends and best practices to continuously improve donor relationships.
  • ·       Works with SCU leadership, Board, and external partners to build social responsibility opportunities for new businesses, among vertical business segments such as tech, law firms, developers, etc.
  • ·       Recognizes and acts on opportunities; takes risks; knows when to change course.


SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

This position has no supervisory responsibilities.


EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor's degree, preferably in business administration, or equivalent work experience.

  • Minimum 5 years in sales and business development role with 2 years of supervisory management experience

  • Experience developing and selling fully integrated sponsorship packages utilizing a variety of assets (i.e. entitlement and naming rights)

  • Experience developing engaging and impactful sales plans and presentations, promotional campaigns, proposals, and associated contract negotiations

  • Strong internal drive and work ethic; willing to go above and beyond to deliver for the organization

  • Excellent written and verbal communication; ability to collaborate, influence and build positive relationships within a multitude of environments

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite

  • Experience with Blackbaud’s Raisers Edge
  • Ability to work independently, meet deadlines, and efficiently lead and prioritize multiple projects at once

  • Ability to travel 20%-30% of the time, based on institutional needs
