Pre-Op/PACU Manager 

 Assumes responsibility as Department manager of Pre-Op/PACU departments. Responsible for all aspects of nursing care delivery in the facility 

Key Responsibilities 

Clinical Quality: 

  1. Assesses, plans, evaluates and ensures the implementation of the patient’s care to achieve identified outcomes and delivers safe patient care according to facility policy and procedure.  

  1. Assesses patient status on admission and on an ongoing basis 

  1. Implements appropriate standards of care based on assessment data and patient’s own goals. Goals are mutually set with the patient and family.  

  1. Coordinates nursing interventions to enhance achievement of expected outcomes and to ensure readiness for discharge.  

  1. Ensure provision of patient care daily in an organized and timely manner. 

  1. Adheres to all facility policies and procedures when  providing patient care.  

  1. Utilizes nursing care standards when planning and implementing patient care.  

  1. Demonstrates ability to direct and provide for patient care in emergency situations. 

  1. Assesses learning needs according to patient’s level of understanding and readiness to learn. 

  1. Evaluates patient’s progress toward outcome achievement on an ongoing basis. 

  1. Revises plan of care based on change in patient status and/or information gathered at change of shift. 

  1. Documents patient’s progress toward achievement of outcomes. 

  1. Directs others in the implementation of the teaching plan. 

  1. Assumes a leadership role in the provision of quality nursing care for patients receiving care. 

  1. Utilizes specialized nursing knowledge, nursing process and discriminative judgement while giving direct or indirect care. 

  1. Assists the Director of Nursing (DON) in interviewing, selecting and retaining qualified staff to meet facility needs. 

  1. Responsible for direction, teaching and management of growth of teammates. 

  1. Oversees and participates in the Performance Improvement Committee to facilitate improvement of nursing care and achievement of mission in the facility. 

  1. Responsible for assisting the DON in ongoing accreditation programs in areas of quality improvement, risk management, infection control and facility and fire safety. 

  1. Participate and plan orientation for new teammates. 

  1. Responsible for interpretation, in-service education, implementation and compliance with OSHA guidelines to assure minimal exposure for patients, staff, physicians and visitors. 

  1. Participates in developing standardized patient education programs as requested.  

  1. Demonstrates continued competence in assessing, treating, and caring for individuals based upon age-specific needs utilizing a development perspective. 

  1. Demonstrates appropriate knowledge and competence of designed skills identified for position. 

  1. Displays an understanding of each patient’s cognitive, physical, emotional, and chronological maturity in the assessments, treatment, and care undertaken based on age-specific criteria. 

  1. Appropriately modifies approach to the patient based upon patient age utilizing a developmental perspective. 

  1. Provides appropriate age-specific interventions related to safety issues. 

  1. Displays ability to coordinate the nursing care provided in the facility. 

  1. Demonstrates appropriate knowledge and competence of designed skills identified for position in preoperative patient care duties.  

  1. Supervises the smooth functioning of the center. 

  1. Assigns personnel according to clinical competency 

  1. Assumes charge of cardiopulmonary emergency situations until physician arrives.  

  1. Interprets facility policies for personnel. 

  1. Supervises center personnel to assure maximum productivity and quality of patient care. 

  1. Staffing patterns are utilized. 

  1. Assists in the evaluations of staff

  1. Utilizes time effectively

  1. Maintains attendance according to guidelines and policy established by facility. 

  1. Adheres to tardiness policy. 

  1. Provides notification for unscheduled absences or tardiness in accordance with established departmental procedures as noted by supervisor.  

  1. Requests scheduled time off according to procedure as noted by supervisor. 

  1. Completes all documentation to ensure the availability of accurate and up to date information in accordance with established standards.

  1. Documents nursing care and physician’s orders according to facility policy and best practice guidelines. 

  1. Adheres to established facility safety requirements and procedures to ensure a safe working environment. 

  1. Demonstrates competent usage of proper body mechanics in all activities. 

  1. Identifies potentially unsafe situations and notifies DON. 

  1. Completes all teammate/patient event and variance documentation in a thorough and timely manner, as required by policy. 

  1. Demonstrates and teaches complete understanding of established emergency procedures for facility.  

  1. Practices infection control, standard precautions and universal precautions as instructed or trained. 

  1. Maintains work area and equipment in a neat, organized manner. 

  1. Assists with housekeeping tasks as necessary to provide a safe environment for patients, teammates, physicians, and guests. 

  1. Performs all other duties as assigned by management. 

Continuous Improvement:  

  1. Maintains and evaluates own clinical expertise and clinical practice. 

  1. Attends and participates in 100% of unit-based staff meetings and demonstrates review of minutes for any meetings missed. 

  1. Provides in-services as requested by management. 

  1. Participates in scheduled performance appraisals and demonstrates dedication to ongoing performance improvement.  

  1. Responsibly demonstrates the importance  of continuing education to the performance of the facility responsibilities and growth in profession. 

  1. Maintains and displays appropriate knowledge of professional developments through printed material and other sources.  

  1. Attends professional training seminars when appropriate for job development and shares information with other teammates.  

  1. Plans, attends, and participates in all applicable facility training and development workshops scheduled by the facility. 

  1. Maintains work area and equipment in an organized and clean manner. 

  1. Maintains dress and appearance according to standards as observed by management.  

  1. Maintains up-to-date knowledge of job description, role, and responsibilities throughout continuing education activities in conjunction with knowledge of teammate’s job descriptions, roles and responsibilities.  

  1. Maintains certification requirements and submits required evidence of certification to facility management for teammate’s file 

  1. Strives to be professional, courteous, helpful and cooperative. 

  1. Performs all other duties as assigned by management. 

 

Compliance

Ensures the department remains fully compliant with all regulatory, accreditation, and organizational standards by enforcing policies, maintaining documentation accuracy, completing required training and audits, and leading corrective actions to support patient safety and quality care.

  1. Communicates patient information to assure confidentiality and continuity of care. 

  1. Documents all patient information according to established standards of care, policies and procedures. 

  1. Provides hand-off reports to other teammates that are accurate, concise and pertinent to the patient’s condition and response to care.

Qualifications   

 

Graduate of an Accredited School of Nursing. Experience in ambulatory surgery nursing, at least two (2) to five (5) years of nursing and management experience preferred. Current state licensure to practice. Successful completion of Basic Life Support (BLS) within 90 days of employment or documentation of current certification. Successful completion of Advanced Life Support (ALS) within 90 days of employment or documentation of current certification. 

 

Physical and Work Environment Requirements  

           

Physical Requirements:   

  • Ability to stand, walk, and move throughout the facility for extended periods.   

  • Frequent bending, lifting, and carrying up to 25-50 pounds of medical equipment, supplies, or patient-related materials.   

  • Ability to assist in lifting, repositioning, and transferring patients as necessary.   

  • Manual dexterity required for using medical instruments and equipment and performing clinical tasks.   

 

Work Environment:   

  • Work is performed in a clinical setting, such as a hospital or healthcare facility, with exposure to a variety of medical conditions and patient care situations.   

  • Exposure to bodily fluids, infectious materials, and other health hazards is common; personal protective equipment (PPE) is provided and required.   

  • The environment can be fast-paced, requiring quick thinking and efficient action, especially in emergency situations.   

  • Shift work may be required, including evenings, weekends, and on-call shifts.   

  • High-stress environment, particularly during times of high patient volume or medical emergencies, necessitating the ability to remain calm and focused.   

  • Adherence to strict safety, infection control, and regulatory protocols is required.
