About the Job
We are currently seeking an Engineer for Nexant’s Des Moines, IA location. This position will serve as a technical specialist in commercial and industrial processes and systems to support our energy auditing projects in our Energy Efficiency Division. Successful candidates must demonstrate ability to fulfill the duties and responsibilities of the position. Our clients include public agencies, investor-owned utilities administering ratepayer-funded energy efficiency programs, energy end users, and energy service companies.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Conduct site visits and identify energy efficiency measures. Conduct energy audits (both scoping-level and investment-grade) at medium to large commercial and industrial facilities to identify and recommend energy efficiency improvements
  • Under the supervision of a senior engineer, build spreadsheets and perform energy efficiency calculations for medium to large commercial and industrial facilities. Measures may include HVAC, compressed air, refrigeration, data centers, process heating, industrial processes, motors, boilers, pumping, food processing and lighting
  • Create energy efficiency computer models using spreadsheets or industry standard software (eQUEST, EnergyPro, Trane Trace, etc) to quantify energy impacts of recommendations
  • Support Nexant’s utility programs under the direction of the engineering managers. Provide technical assistance to support energy efficiency project implementation
  • Write technical reports. Produce high quality deliverables (reports and spreadsheets) demonstrating technical excellence, objectivity, and clarity while maintaining project schedules
  • Conduct measurement and verification tasks as warranted
  • Meet overall project budgets and profitability targets
  • Provide the highest level of customer service, including reliable and responsive service
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s or Master's degree in mechanical or similar engineering preferred; EIT preferred or intent to pursue
  • A strong understanding of mechanical and electrical systems and principals; lighting, motors, thermodynamics, fluids, and heat transfer
  • 0-2 years of experience in a related field
  • Experience in the following areas is a plus:
      • Understanding of HVAC, electrical, plumbing, building automation/controls
      • Commissioning and/or retro-commissioning test procedures, schematic diagrams, and system specifications
      • Building and energy modeling/simulation tools (eg Trace, DOE-2, eQuest)
      • Calculation of energy savings for commercial HVAC and/or industrial process energy efficiency improvements
  • Ability to manage multiple projects while meeting deliverable deadlines and budgets
  • Ability to quickly learn complex technical subjects
  • Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office programs including Word and Excel
  • Excellent writing, interpersonal, presentation, and analytical skills
Supervision Received
  • Receives operational direction from Team Leader of senior engineering manager
  • May receive direction from the programs’ managers
Supervision Exercised
  • May provide operational guidance or direction to administrative support specialists in assigned area of responsibility
