About the Job

Nexant is currently seeking a Director of Engineering for our Utility Services (UTS) Business Unit. This position will be located in Madison, WI, Hinsdale, IL, Salt Lake City, UT, or Denver, CO, and will be responsible for overseeing the engineering function within the UTS Business Unit. The mission of the Director of Engineering is to ensure the Engineering function within Nexant provides best in class engineering services for contracts Nexant delivers to utilities and/or energy end-users. The Director of Engineering will ensure each regional Engineering team is leveraging best practices within the industry and organization and that the application of engineering tools are being done so in a high quality fashion. The regional Engineering Managers will engage with the Director of Engineering to support the recruitment, development and resource balancing of engineering staff. Our expert technical capabilities, as well as our oral and written skills, are critical to our success; therefore, the Director of Engineering will lead and mentor engineers, provide them with technical, communication and process direction, and also facilitate the creation of tools to streamline program processes. The Director of Engineering will keep their personal technical and customer service skills sharp by continuing to support engineering functions in the regional office of which they reside in.

Duties and Responsibilities

Demonstrating leadership 
•Serve as a trusted technical expert to engineers, energy managers, leadership members and other staff
•Ensure the skills and qualifications of the engineering team align with the scope of work our contracts command
•Work collaboratively with other leaders/managers in the organization to ensure the engineering function is adequately supporting our client contracts: skills and qualifications, staff availability, etc.
•Support recruiting, interviewing and training activities for new hires
•Make wise decisions quickly, despite ambiguity, and help others to do the same
•Take personal accountability for your work and actions and hold engineering team members accountable for theirs

Promoting continuous improvement
•Promote continued education (internal and external) on relevant topics so the engineering function remains current and as a resource for our clients to turn to on emerging topics and technologies
•Facilitate technical working groups within the engineering function to ensure best practices by service or end-use systems are evolving and are known by the entire engineering team
•Identify customer and client concerns and provide appropriate feedback to the program team(s) to enhance Nexant’s deliverables and practices
•Remain open to change; listen and implement ideas to alleviate tedious tasks and unnecessary steps in the engineering process
•Encourage engineers to update standard tools when they have developed improvements as part of their review process
•Research technology that may provide cost-efficiencies to our process without sacrificing technical accuracy

Maintaining quality of deliverables and customer communication
•Review deliverables and provide appropriate feedback to regional Engineering Managers
•Check the technical accuracy of deliverables to maintain high quality standards
•Review and approve communication between engineers and clients to maintain the appropriate message and minimize unnecessary customer requests
Managing technical aspects of engineering services
•Discuss technical approaches with engineers to determine appropriate data needs and process steps for an efficient and timely review
•Provide technical advice for complex project reviews
•Provide QA/QC reviews of projects with large impacts associated with them: savings, incentives, etc.
•Review and approve measurement and verification plans for projects
•Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

•Bachelor’s or master’s degree in mechanical or electrical engineering, sustainable building practices, or similar
•Minimum 10 years of experience within the energy efficiency or building efficiency industry 
•P.E. in Mechanical Engineering and CEM certification are desirable 
•Excellent writing, interpersonal, training and analytical skills
•Excellent attention to detail 
•Proven team and client management ability
•Proven time management ability. Able to meet deadlines and anticipate difficulty in meeting deadlines
•Hands-on experience with mechanical, electrical, and control systems 
•Energy audit and Retrocommissioning experience
•Experience working with mechanical and electrical contractors
•High level technical skill with mechanical/electrical systems coupled with a strong knowledge of building controls systems/software based monitoring platforms, energy management, and commissioning processes with the ability to run deep analytics and develop insights
•Ability to communicate at tactical level with clients and 3rd parties to influence desired outcomes supported by facts/data
•Strong listening, oral, written, and presentation skills complimented by excellent problem solving and decision making capabilities are required.   Computer proficiency is necessary.
•Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office programs, Google programs and other cloud-based computing platforms
•Must be able to travel locally (nationally or internationally) up to approximately 20% of the time.
•Local candidates preferred
