The Muslim Community Network (MCN) uses civic education, leadership development, and diversity education to shape public narratives around what it means to be Muslim in America. Our programs promote informed civic participation and empower Muslim New Yorkers to build a more just and inclusive society.
Position Overview:
MCN seeks a part-time Advocacy Program Coordinator to lead our growing advocacy portfolio, supporting community-driven efforts to combat Islamophobia, hate crimes, surveillance, and racial inequity. The coordinator will oversee coalition-building, policy engagement, and public education initiatives that amplify the voices and needs of Muslim New Yorkers.
The ideal candidate is a strategic thinker and strong communicator with experience in organizing, advocacy, and public policy. This role reports to the Advocacy Program Manager and collaborates closely with program and community engagement staff.
Key Responsibilities:
Program Leadership & Coalition-Building
- Coordinate the annual Muslim Stakeholder’s Roundtable, a coalition of 30+ Muslim-serving nonprofits.
- Facilitate shared planning sessions and joint advocacy efforts to strengthen the Muslim civil society ecosystem in NYC.
Hate Crimes Prevention & Community Safety
- Coordinate MCN’s Hate Crimes Prevention Initiative, including:
- Facilitating workshops and trainings in houses of worship, schools, hospitals, and public institutions.
- Establishing hate crime reporting systems across NYC mosques.
- Conducting annual community safety surveys, analyzing data, and producing reports to inform policy.
- Supporting individuals impacted by hate through safety planning, referrals, and restorative practices.
Advocacy & Public Engagement
- Lead advocacy campaigns focused on Islamophobia, immigration, racial justice, and culturally responsive services.
- Assist in managing volunteers and order logistics for MCN’s monthly Manhattan soup kitchen.
- Represent MCN in citywide, statewide, and national coalitions and task forces.
- Translate community needs into policy recommendations and calls to action.
- Help develop media and social media campaigns to share Muslim American stories and MCN's advocacy efforts.
Organizational Strategy & Collaboration
- Contribute to MCN’s overall advocacy strategy and help drive program innovation.
- Work with staff on event planning, program evaluation, and partnerships.
- Support cross-functional initiatives as needed, including gala support and volunteer engagement.
Schedule & Work Environment:
- Part-time, Monday–Friday, 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM.
- 15 minimum hours and 29 maximum hours per week.
- Occasional evening or weekend work required.
- Hybrid work environment.
Requirements:
- Minimum 1 year of experience in community organizing, advocacy, or policy work.
- Skilled in training facilitation and public speaking.
- Experience working with diverse, faith-based, immigrant, and BIPOC communities.
- Strong organizational, communication, and project management skills.
- Proficiency in MS Office, Google Suite, Canva and social media tools.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in political science, Social Work, Public Administration, or a related field.
- Experience in voter engagement, coalition-building, or campaign development.
- Cultural competency and ability to engage across identity and experience.
- Familiarity with NYC public policy and the Muslim American experience.
- Fluency in Arabic, French, Bangla, or other community languages is a plus.
