Under the supervision of the Director of Plant Operations, the Project Engineer (PE) oversees, assesses, and improves new and existing production and transactional processes. The Project Engineer works closely with Production, Supply Chain, Quality, EHS, Facilities & Equipment Maintenance, and R&D teams to optimize Safety, Quality, Delivery, and Cost performance. Additional focus areas include (a) process flow and resource efficiency, (b) standardized work, (c) visual management and reporting, (d) work floor maintenance, and (e) maintenance of equipment and tools.

 

Essential Functions/Responsibilities

 

    • Develops and implements efficient production methods and best practices for new and existing production and transactional processes.
    • Provides thorough instructions (SOPs) to ensure Critical to Quality (CTQ) and Critical to Process (CTP) requirements are observed by personnel.
    • Analyzes and solves process -related problems through the application of Lean Six Sigma concepts and tools.
    • Develops a safe, organized, and clean work environment through the application of 6S and visual Management, and Kaizen.
    • Measures compliance with applicable safety and quality standards.
    • Tracks key performance metrics to discover opportunities for process improvement.
    • Assesses work floor maintenance, work floor layout, set up times, and maintenance of equipment and tools.
    • Actively supports the Lean transformation of the organization.
    • Evaluates the manufacturability of current and new products and provides input to the S&OP planning process.
    • Develops and implements new production techniques that lead to cost reductions, higher product quality, and better operational and financial capabilities. 
    • Continuously improves the uptime and availability of critical equipment and tools.
    • Actively participates in LSS training and coaching activities.
    • Develops efficient reporting mechanisms related to safety, quality, delivery, and cost metrics.

 

 

Qualifications & Experience

 

    • BS in Engineering, Supply Chain or Business, or related field (graduate degree preferred)
    • Previous experience managing projects in Operations/ Production/ Manufacturing/ Continuous Improvement.
    • Excellent analytical and math skills
    • Excellent team-building and interpersonal skills
    • Ability to identify, assess, and solve problems and deal with a variety of variables in situations where limited standardization exists.
    • Previous experience working with process engineering software systems (i.e., CAD/ AutoCAD, Solid Works)
    • Lean Six Sigma Green Belt certification (LSS Black Belt preferred).
    • Proficiency in MS Office including Outlook, Word, and Excel.

Working Environment

While performing the essential responsibilities of this position, team member generally will work in a manufacturing environment. While in manufacturing areas, the team member may also be exposed to moderate background noise, moderate amounts of airborne graphite dust, presence of natural and artificial light, exposure to work temperatures from ambient to controlled, hard surfaces for standing and walking. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) will be required.
