OPT Industries (http://optindustries.com) is a rapidly growing, venture-backed MIT spinoff company that focuses on building the next generation of additive manufacturing technology. Working at the intersection of additive manufacturing, computational design and polymer science, we design and manufacture highly customizable materials and products- everything from medical devices to cosmetics packages.

Materials are at the core of what we do. As we continue to expand our operation, we are looking for an experienced scientist/engineer to develop novel polymer and processing methods to meet a diverse range of performance targets for our customers’ products. Candidates must be self-motivated, possess excellent communication skills, and excited to collaborate with a dynamic team to bring material solutions to the world’s top-tier brands.

Opportunities

  • Strategic planning and execution of long-term novel photo chemistry, polymer and processes for 3d printing
  • Leading the short- and midterm develop of new photopolymer and processes for cosmetics and consumer products.
  • Collaborating with a talented team with diverse engineering and design backgrounds to drive priorities.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a technical lead for the polymer team to identify, plan and execute novel photopolymer synthesis, formulation and scale up for our 3D printing process.
  • Translate product requirements into scalable polymer solutions.
  • Perform hands-on formulation and characterization of the various photo resin and understand how process changes affect properties and performance of final products
  • Evaluate the consistency of the processes, including their effects on pot-life and long-term stabilities. Keep thorough batch and characterization records.
  • Working cross-functionally with Software/Hardware teams to resolve causes of printing challenges. Effective communication of the development across the team
  • Recruit and lead junior engineers to drive the team’s priorities.

Skills & Qualifications

  • 10+ years industrial experience in polymer and photopolymer development and production scale-up; experience in 3D printing industry is a plus.
  • Master or PhD in chemistry, organic chemistry, polymer chemistry, or relevant degree.
  • Solid knowledge of photopolymerization chemistry as well as related structure property relationships.
  • Lab skill for polymer formulation and testing are required.
  • Strong problem-solving skills. Pragmatic over philosophy.
  • Effective communication, comfortable working collaboratively on projects.
  • Excellent organizational skills and an eye for detail. Self-sufficient and proactive.
