LOCATION

Candidates should be based in the NY metro area as this position requires you to commute 2-3 times per week to the New York City office.

 

ABOUT THE ROLE

Comic Relief US (CRUS) is hiring an Editorial Director to manage the planning, development and delivery of our digital content. Core to this role will be creating captivating and engaging content that tells our story, delivers our campaigns, helps us fundraise, builds audience and above all – entertains and connects.  

 

WHAT YOU WILL DO

The person in this role will have a strong writing background, creative mind, and a passion for storytelling. They will be as fluent in the language of philanthropy and nonprofits as they are in memes and popular culture. They will be excited by the opportunity to craft and establish a distinct brand voice and ensure it is consistently articulated across all content. They will help conceive and manage content across multiple digital platforms, and be responsible for developing and maintaining an editorial calendar, writing and editing content to amplify our newsworthy activities and tracking and promoting the speaking engagements of our executives.  

  • Serve as the primary editor for CRUS, and contribute to content production

  • In partnership with the leadership, set the organization’s editorial direction and tone in all content.

  • Build schedules for long-term projects and deliver efficiently on quick turnarounds.

  • Serve as an editorial thought partner across the communications, marketing and grants teams, including email, digital and social media.

  • Oversee day-to-day editorial tasks including drafting and editing copy, assigning work to internal team and freelance writers, overseeing all email campaign content, and creating social, blog and website content, helping to craft institutional messages, contributing to video production, digital and marketing campaigns.

  • Manage the editorial content of the website and blog, ensuring the content is kept fresh and up-to-date.

  • In partnership with leadership, pursue and facilitate thought leadership and advocacy opportunities for Comic Relief US; build an advocacy strategy to help guide CRUS’s plans and decisions as they relate to thought leadership and advocacy.

  • Work across departments to support writing and editing needs.

  • Manage every detail of editorial projects and deliverables, create production and editorial schedules and manage teams to ensure a steady and timely flow of high-level work.

  • Manage all members of the content team, assist in developing work plans for each member, and assess their performance on a regular basis.

  • Drive the adoption of processes and standards, including editorial guidelines, and supporting best editorial practices.

  • Train, mentor, and onboard content team.

 

ABOUT YOU

  • A bachelor’s degree, with a concentration in writing, journalism, communications or adjacent course of study preferred.

  • A minimum of ten years of experience in journalism, communications and/or content creation with experience in the non-profit space.

  • Knowledge and familiarity with a full spectrum of social and economic issues;

  • Superb editing and superior writing skills, and the ability to shape clear and compelling content with sharp attention to detail.

  • Excellent editorial judgment coupled with knowledge of the complexities associated with publishing thought leadership on behalf of an organization.

  • Managerial experience, including experience building, developing and mentoring a team.

  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects, maintain schedules and enforce deadlines in a cross-disciplinary environment with quick turnaround times.

  • Proven ability to build strategic working relationships with senior leadership, peers, partners and vendors.

  • Demonstrated commitment to poverty alleviation and social justice through lived and/or work experience, educational background, and volunteer experience (essential).

  • Experience addressing the needs of children, advancing equity and justice for historically underserved communities (preferred).

THE PAY

CRUS offers competitive compensation. The actual salary is dependent upon many factors, including but not limited to: abilities, skills, work experience, knowledge, business needs, and market demands. The base pay range is subject to change and may be modified.
