Position Description:

The San Francisco Estuary Institute (SFEI) seeks an environmental analyst to join an interdisciplinary team investigating nutrient biogeochemistry and ecosystem responses in San Francisco Bay. This work will be carried out in support of the San Francisco Bay Nutrient Management Strategy (NMS; see http://sfbaynutrients.sfei.org), a multi-year science program studying the impacts of nutrient loads to San Francisco Bay and evaluating potential management actions. Working with regional collaborators, we study the Bay’s biogeochemistry, water quality, and habitat condition using ship-based sampling, high-frequency in situ sensors, bivalves as biosentinels of algal toxins, and coupled hydrodynamic-biogeochemical modeling.

The Environmental Analyst must be able to: (1) coordinate logistics and carry out field work in the estuarine environment; (2) collect, review and synthesize scientific data and information from various sources; (3) have the ability to work well in teams as well as work independently with general direction from senior scientific staff; and (4) communicate findings effectively in presentations, reports, memoranda, and scientific journals.

Desired Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, biology, environmental science, geology, ecology, oceanography, engineering, or another related scientific field.

  • Familiarity with environmental chemistry or environmental science, particularly field work, data analysis, and report writing.

  • Ability to lead or contribute to aspects of boat or shipped based field work in the estuarine environment.

  • Excellent communication, presentation and writing skills and ability to synthesize information.

  • Ability to work well in teams as well work independently with general direction from senior scientific staff.

  • Valid Driver’s License.

The duties of the Environmental Analyst are diverse and require an enthusiastic team-oriented individual. Typical duties will include:

  • Identifying, compiling, and organizing field and laboratory data and information from studies within and outside of SFEI.

  • Conducting verification/validation (QA/QC) of NMS data and working with laboratories to troubleshoot analyses and reporting issues as needed.

  • Assisting with writing technical reports, journal articles, memoranda, and internal reports.

  • Assisting in the development of posters and presentations for public meetings and scientific conferences.
