About the role

The Development and Communications Manager is a dynamic position that combines the strategic aspects of donor cultivation and stewardship with the creative elements of storytelling and multi-channel communications - all in service of driving organizational growth and impact. This role plays a key part in moving the organization towards our revenue goals, including assisting with our efforts to research, identify, and connect with new donors and supporting our institutional and individual donor pipeline. The Development and Communications Manager will also play a key part in our external communications, maintaining our social media channels, producing newsletters that engage our diverse audiences, and producing storytelling content that helps communicate what we do in a compelling way. The ideal candidate will have an exceptional eye for detail and be a strong communicator and storyteller - visually, written, and orally. This position reports directly to the Sr. Director of Development. 

 

Communications

  • Manage and create content for all of Hack the Hood’s digital platforms, including social media, email newsletter, blog, and website

  • Oversee annual communications calendar, balancing content across channels and maintaining brand consistency across all materials

  • Create impactful storytelling content, including learner stories and program impact in print, video, and graphic formats

  • Support fundraising campaigns and learner recruitment via various channels

  • Liaise with external PR/branding/marketing vendors

  • Work with programs and development teams to produce program overviews and other materials to effectively and clearly communicate our work and programs to external audiences

Grants Management & Proposal Writing

  • Craft compelling and well-researched proposals to secure funding from corporate, foundation, government, and individual donors 

  • Manage grants and reporting calendar, ensuring timely submissions of all reporting and compliance deliverables 

  • Enhance donor engagement through excellent customer service and stewardship 

Donor Research & Outreach

  • Identify and research new funding opportunities aligned with Hack the Hood's mission and programs to expand the organization's pipeline of prospects and donors

  • Assist with fundraising campaigns, events, and donor recognition initiatives 

  • Conduct outreach to potential donors prior to application submission to build and/or facilitate relationship-building with the organization 

  • Help ensure high levels of donor engagement, stewardship, and retention, including connecting donors to engagement opportunities within the organization and hosting fundraising and cultivation events 

Development Operations

  • Help manage the development team’s CRM (Salesforce) and donor tracking systems, ensuring timely and accurate data entries for donations across multiple platforms (checks, online, ACH, etc.)

  • Manage timely and accurate donor acknowledgment processes

  • Work in collaboration with other team members during audits to provide development-related information to auditors

  • Act as the liaison with the external accounting firm to furnish development-related information needed for bookkeeping purposes, such as information on grants received, and attend Finance/Development meetings

  • Create donor invoices in Quickbooks

We’re excited to engage candidates with

  • At least 3-5 years experience working in communications and development

  • Experience working with nonprofits and in an educational environment, working with Black, Latinx, and Indigenous learners

Compensation

The salary for this position is between $85,000 and $90,000. Hack the Hood is committed to transparent, equitable compensation practices. Salaries are benchmarked using current market data and salary bands are created to demonstrate the growth potential within the band.
