Senior Chemical Engineer/Chemist
X-Bow is looking for a full-time, experienced Senior Chemical Engineer or Chemist to participate in the technology development of additively manufactured solid rocket motor propellant. This position will include ordnance, propellant chemistry, and general engineering in a laboratory/field environment. The nature of this work requires significant training to safely operate with ordnance, energetic materials and hazardous chemicals.
Position Luling, TX with some travel to Socorro, NM.
Developing & testing solid rocket motor propellant formulations for use in our additive manufacturing process
Developing associated inert simulants for use in optimizing the manufacturing process
Characterizing and optimizing both propellants and simulants, including rheological and mechanical properties.
Develop propellant requirements, specifications, verification plans, and perform qualification and characterization testing.
Perform analysis of data to interpret test results.
Perform statistical research, peer and literature review to evaluate and present test data internally and externally
Working with mechanical, electrical, materials and process engineers to refine & optimize additive manufacturing methods and associated equipment.
Provide input to help solve diverse engineering problems in day-to-day operations
Recognize and implement prudent work practices to maintain safety and control hazards when working with energetic chemistries
Handling, measuring and mixing of propellant, simulant, liners, in addition to commercial thermoplastics and thermosets.
Handling, packaging & tracking raw materials and chemicals, including federally controlled materials.
Manage a propellant laboratory including materials inventory & tracking, test equipment, hazards abatement, and waste management and storage.
Support Business Development with proposals, presentations and reports.
Experience and Skill Requirements
Minimum of 8 years’ experience in similar or related fields, preferably working with propellants or other energetic materials.
Experience with Process Hazard Analysis, Process Safety Management techniques
Hands-on experience working in a chemistry laboratory with equipment such as viscometers/rheometers, densitometers, moisture analyzers, FTIR/ATR spectrochemical analysis, UV/ spectrophotometry, tensile test apparatus, polymer characterization by instrumental or wet-chemical methods.
Experience with analytical method development, statistical process control, Experimental Design, Response Surface Analysis, a plus.
Successful demonstration of lab-based skills in a government, university or industrial setting, accomplished in a team environment, examples to include property management, scheduling, interim/final report generation, failure mode analysis with cause/corrective action
Experience in procedure writing, process documentation, manufacturing conformance in QA/QC scenarios.
Excellent communication and technical writing skills
Proficient in Microsoft Office and common engineering applications
B.S. in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Materials Science, or related Engineering/Science degree. Master’s Degree a plus.
