Position Title: House Manager 

Department: Marketing & Patron Experience 

Reports To: Bailey Bryant, Event Manager

Type: Part-Time; Non-Exempt 

Compensation:  $20.80 per hour; estimated 10-20 hours per month based on availability/programming 

Schedule: Available Shifts Include Tuesday–Sunday Evenings 5:00pm-11:00pm;  

Saturdays and Sundays: 11:00am-5:00pm 

Location: On-Site in the Music Hall at Fair Park. No remote work anticipated.

Position Summary:  

This part-time position serves as the face of the Front of House staff and is the lead supervisor of the entire usher staff working each performance. This individual will be part of a team of four House Managers at least one of whom will work with the Event Manager to ensure adequate supervision of front of house staff and associated customer service duties at each ticketed Music Hall performance. Along with the Event Manager, this position is a liaison between Front of House and various departments during an event. They are one of the first escalated points of contact for audiences at events including approximately 15 eight-performance weeks of Broadway programming plus concerts, comedy, dance, and dozens of other special events throughout the year. 

 

Under the direction, scheduling, and management oversight of the Event Manager, this role will be cross trained in customer service and house management policies. The primary goal of this role is to ensure all Front of House Associates are adequately prepared to give patrons a positive experience with proper supervision and assistance. In addition to that, this individual works to make sure customers safely and securely enjoy their experience upon their arrival on Fair Park grounds, during their time enjoying the artistry and amenities offered inside the Music Hall, and through their departure after the show. 

 

This individual will monitor staff to ensure that all Music Hall visitors observe the terms and conditions of entry while inside the nearly 100-year-old historic civic building. 

 

This position requires regular on-site work in and around the Music Hall at Fair Park based on event schedules. No remote work is anticipated in this role. Familiarity with Fair Park and its surrounding neighborhoods is strongly preferred. 

 

Responsibilities include but are not limited to: 

  • Monitor entrances to ensure only authorized personnel/equipment are granted entry 

  • Greet patrons in a friendly manner and offer assistance as needed 

  • Maintain order and adherence to safety and security rules 

  • Serve as Head Usher or Lobby Lead if one hasn’t been assigned 

  • Provide directions to private suites, restrooms, restaurant, and common areas  

  • Line management 

  • Enforce auditorium/decorum rules and policies 

  • Assist guests who need mobility assistance or have other accessibility requests 

  • Professionally escalate special requests or conflicts or further escalate to Event Manager if needed 

  • Monitor FOH operations as the on-duty manager for each performance, and assist Lobby Lead and Head Usher with on-the-ground operations if needed 

  • Observe all workplace safety laws/guidelines and immediately notify relevant parties of any safety concerns or injuries for patrons or employees alike 

  • Promptly and completely fill out all patron-facing incident reports when needed 

  • Make sure the lobby area layout is reflective of the layout requirements for the performance 

  • Ensure all staff are kept up-to-date on all information needed to complete their job effectively and safely 

  • Hold all staff members to the organizational standards, and fairly discipline staff members as needed per company policies 

  • Check to make sure all radios and ticket scanners and other front-of-house equipment is fully charged and ready for use before each shift begins 

  • Complete the pre-shift and post-shift checklists for each show and promptly report any cleanliness or maintenance issues to the appropriate staff 

  • Facilitate a briefing with ushers before each performance 

  • Complete Show Reports with relevant show-related information 

  • Making routine and emergency announcements (excluding anything needing to be made from backstage) 

  • Receive show information from Event Manager or production leaders and distribute to staff for each performance 

  • Monitor relevant show related times and whether the show is running according to schedule 

  • Escalate issues to Event Manager or other full-time management staff at Broadway Dallas, if needed 

  • Routinely work in non-leadership roles within the department to better understand the inner workings of the front of house team 

 

Qualifications: 

  • Flexible scheduling availability to work nights, weekends and occasional holidays 

  • Must work at least 20% (or about 3 shows per 2-week engagement) of all scheduled events 

  • 1-2 years of experience working in a patron-facing role in a theatre or related live event venue 

  • High School Diploma or GED 

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills 

  • 1-2 years of supervisory experience leading a large group of staff and/or volunteers 

  • Demonstrated ability to work with large and diverse crowds varying in languages/communication styles, physical and mental abilities, racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds 

  • Comfortable speaking in front of and interacting with a large group of people 

  • Availability to work varying extended and night/weekend work hours 

  • Have regular access to a motor vehicle or have other reliable means of transportation to and from the Music Hall 

  • Move and position items up to 30 pounds 

  • Able to calmly work in the high pressure, constantly changing environment of live events 

  • Able to equitably assign staff members to various tasks in a kind and professional manner 

  • Position oneself into and out of crawl spaces and confined areas 

  • Traverse the Music Hall and surrounding Fair Park areas multiple times in one shift/day 

  • Ascend/descend stairs, stand, sit, bend and walk for extended periods of time Demonstrated punctuality and reliability in scheduling and directed tasks 

  • A professional and courteous manner and communication in dealing with internal and external customers  

  • Demonstrated ability to follow oral and written instructions 

  • Ability to think critically and problem solve in an effective and timely manner 

  • Service-oriented and flexible in positions and tasks assigned 

  • Familiarity with and consistent access to basic computer hardware and software including ability to use a laptop and smartphone/tablet, checking email/workplace messaging/scheduling software, etc.  

 

Preferred Skills/Qualifications:  

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Communications, Hospitality or other related field 

  • Previous management or supervisory experience in entertainment or hospitality industry 

  • Bilingual: ASL, Spanish, Vietnamese, Mandarin, Korean, Amharic or other 

  • CPR/First Aid Certified 

  • Certified Crowd Manager 

  • Passion for the arts and/or live events
