General Description
The Broadway Dallas High School Musical Theatre Awards (HSMTA) inspires and honors excellence in high school musical theatre, and recognizes the importance of musical theatre and arts education within the North Texas community. This regional program culminates with an awards ceremony, modeled after the Tony Awards®, to recognize students, their productions, and the educators that support them. Broadway Dallas awards $65,000 in scholarship funds to students furthering their educational and professional goals. In addition, the winners of the Outstanding Lead Performer Award have the opportunity to participate in the National High School Musical Theatre Awards® (Jimmy Awards) in New York City.
HSMTA adjudicators attend high school productions in and around North Texas, provide scores and written feedback to students and educators mounting those productions, and this material serves as the basis for the awards distributed. This is your chance to see up to a dozen (or more) musical performances, hone your constructive criticism skills, and join a team of fellow adjudicators and Broadway Dallas staff committed to the integrity and growth of this marquee education program.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Supporting, encouraging, and building the next generation of musical theatre performers
- Attend high school musical performances between January 2024-April 2024
- Provide detailed, thoughtful written critique based on a provided rubric after viewing these performances
- Provide measured, equitable, and thoughtful numerical scores to multiple production aspects
- Attend live final adjudication to select final Lead Performer Winners on May 20, 2024
Qualifications
- Two years of experience in the theatre field: performance, technical work, administration, etc.
- Associate’s Degree or higher and preferably in an aligned area of study: theatre, musical theatre, education, theatre management, performing arts
Requirements
- Demonstrated reliability, punctuality, and ability to complete assigned tasks.
- Demonstrated ability to craft quality, education-focused critique.
- Ability to adjudicate high school theatre productions based on provided rubric
- Access to a consistent method of transport to/from the Music Hall at Fair Park and locations in/around Dallas and neighboring counties.
Preferred Skills:
- Demonstrated passion for live performance
- Enthusiasm for work with young individuals
