Solar One is a 501c(3) organization that empowers communities in the New York City metro area to thrive in the face of the challenges brought on by climate change and embrace a world that is low carbon, resource efficient, and socially inclusive.  

 

Initially founded in 2004 to manage Stuyvesant Cove Park, a two-acre native plant park and a small environmental education center, Solar One has grown into an award-winning organization with a thriving array of programs. Solar One seeks an Environmental Educator to deliver quality environmental STEM and climate action education in NYC.

 

Job Summary:  

The Environmental Educator will teach Solar One’s environmental STEM and climate action programs with K-12 students across all 5 boroughs. They will also assist the Education Senior Program Manager with teaching professional learning to NYC PS teachers at our office in Long Island City, Queens. Solar One’s activities include hands-on activities such as building solar race cars, classroom energy audits and designing wind turbine blades. Solar One explores these concepts through a culturally relevant lens and centers climate justice. The Environmental Educator will work in K-12 classrooms, libraries, afterschool programs and other youth spaces.

 

Job Duties: 

  • Teaching Solar One’s curriculum focused on climate action through energy, materials, water, and food for grades 2-12.  The programs mainly take place in schools, afterschool programs, or public libraries.  The ability to travel around NYC is essential.

  • Coordinate programs with schools and other community partners. This includes program planning, materials coordination, and scheduling. 

  • Delivering a 6 week intensive high school summer school program focused on green careers from July through mid-August.

  • Assist the Education Senior Program Manager with administrative tasks such as reporting and program evaluation.

  • Overseeing curriculum design in collaboration with the education team and/or external partners.

  • Tracking and recording activities delivered to schools and teachers.

Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree required. 

  • At least three years of experience teaching K-12 students content aligned with STEM, climate action, and/or environmental sustainability. Classroom experience is strongly preferred.

  • Experience leading professional development training to teachers is preferred.

  • Demonstrated cultural competency in teaching in NYC public schools. 

  • Experience with curriculum development.

  • Knowledge of anti-racist and culturally responsive pedagogy is strongly preferred.

  • Demonstrated success in communicating with partner organizations and individuals to build and maintain strong partnerships.

  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.

  • Strong customer service skills. 

  • Strong organization skills and attention to detail.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite including Word, Excel PowerPoint, Outlook, and/or Google Suite, including Calendar, Docs, Spreadsheet, and Drive.

  • Maturity and ability to work independently.

Pay and Benefits

This position is Full Time / Exempt

Paying $64,000-$72,000 per year  (salary based on experience)
