We are seeking a dynamic individual passionate about sustainable and inclusive community development to lead the Clean Energy Communities Program (CECP) in NYC/Downstate region. CECP is a program funded by the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) which provides direct technical assistance and grant funding to municipalities that complete High Impact Actions to reduce their carbon emissions. This is a unique opportunity to build and mentor a team and work collaboratively with City, State and community partners to advance sustainability in our community. This position is funded for the next three years, and a successful Director will have opportunities to grow the program and extend/expand the role.


Job Summary

The Director, Clean Energy Communities Program will be responsible for:

·       Managing the successful delivery of the NYSERDA CECP in the Downstate Region.

·       Mentoring and supporting three full-time staff members that are embedded within the Mayor’s Office of Climate & Sustainability (MOC&S) and the Department of Citywide Administrative Services Division of Energy Management (DCAS DEM).

·       Hiring and supervising a Community Campaigns Coordinator who will work with community based organizations throughout New York City to help launch clean energy campaigns focused on solar, electrification, energy efficiency and more.

·       Managing a relationship with Cameron Engineering, Solar One’s highly independent subcontractor that delivers the CECP program in Long Island.

·       Managing a relationship with the NYSERDA CECP Project Manager and actively participating in the CECP Statewide network via weekly calls and subject-matter specific working groups.

·       Developing and managing working relationships with DCAS DEM and MOC&S managers to support effective CECP program delivery and to support a positive work environment for Solar One’s agency-embedded staff.

·       Re-launching Solar One’s Clean Energy Connections event series in collaboration with Solar One staff and partner organizations.

·       Developing quarterly plans for the Downstate Region.

·       Completing monthly reporting and expense/budget management for the program.

·       Identifying opportunities to grow the impact of the program in the Downstate Region.

·       Participating in interdepartmental initiatives that strengthen/improve Solar One and advance the organization’s mission.


Qualifications and Skills

Successful candidates for this role will have the following qualifications and skills:


Experience and Subject Matter Expertise

·       Master’s Degree in urban planning, environmental science, business, public administration or a related field and 3-5 years of professional experience in sustainability, environmental policy or clean energy. Or a Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant field and at least 5 years of professional experience in sustainability, environmental policy or clean energy.

·       Knowledge of New York City and State government and clean energy programs and policies.

·       Experience managing staff, subcontractors, and partner relationships.

·       Experience with community organizing, ideally working on clean energy campaigns.

·       Experience managing contracts and budgets.

·       Knowledge and appreciation of New York City’s many neighborhoods and diverse communities.

Technical Skills

·       Computer skills, including fluency in the Google GSuite, Excel and PowerPoint

·       Knowledge of or ability to learn to use Salesforce and other web-based applications

·       Strong writing skills for progress reports and professional email correspondence

Pay and Benefits

This position is Full Time / Exempt

Annual salary starting at $80,000-90,000/year
